This show is SO good, and I know a few people on the forum watch it, and I feel like sometimes I’m gonna need somewhere to put down my thoughts and theories or I’ll never be able to keep it all straight in my head because the show is so twisty and awesome. So, here’s comes a ramble…
I still have no solid idea of who killed Sam.
What’s up with that statue? I guess Asher was the current owner judging by his banging on the door, but where exactly was it pre-murder? It was implied Michaela took it off Asher, so why did they have it? Didn’t they just put it back on the shelf after cleaning it, like it had been there all along, but was it really? One thing we do know is that the scales on the statue are missing after the murder, but none of them seem to have noticed that. I couldn’t see it on the rug in the shot from above in the most recent ep, and I think it may well have gotten rolled up in the rug with Sam, and the fire wouldn’t have destroyed it, so wherever Sam’s remains end up, part of the murder weapon is there too, and that’s not gonna be good.
I liked how Connor gave a rundown of all the evidence that could be held against them – Asher knew they were there, a cop saw them there too, their DNA all over the crime scene, the fibers from the rug in the car, street cameras recording them even as they’re going to get lighter fluid from out of town to try and avoid detection. I also wonder if time stamps on the pics they took at the bonfire to use as their alibi could become evidence too, because those pics won’t be spaced out over the whole night, they all took them within the space of just a few minutes. Basically, these kids are so screwed. LOL
Rebecca. She obviously has a tie to Lila who had a tie to Sam, (Annalise’s final line in ep 4 was GOLD OMG), and she’s at the house on the murder night, but how does it all tie together? Wes is obviously trying to protect Rebecca, but is that because she actually had something to do with killing Sam, (possibly because he killed Lila), or is she just on probation or whatever after being a suspect in Lila’s murder, so she’ll be in trouble if she’s associated with this Sam mess in any way even if she actually had nothing to do with killing him?
Nate. Is now so busted after Bonnie was all, “I know he’s investigating the thing,” when he wasn’t actually officially investigating the thing. He lied to Annalise about Sam not acting suspiciously, but if Bonnie lets it slip to Annalise that she saw him in Sam’s car, how would Annalise respond to that? Especially now that she’s got the pics of her naked husband on Lila’s phone, so she obviously knows there’s something more going on? She trusted that Nate was telling her the truth, so why did he lie? If he knows that Sam is a legit suspect in the murder, why is he not warning Annalise of that? What does he get out of it by continuing to investigate Sam while keeping Annalise in the dark about it all? I wonder if we’re ever gonna meet Nate’s wife, all we know about her so far is that she’s recently diagnosed with cancer. It’d be cool if she ends up playing into the larger plot somehow, if she finds out about the affair and/or her husband’s investigtion of Annalise’s husband.
Speaking of which, the time Sam checked his car out was 7pm on the 29th, and back in at 6:05am on the 30th. When Nate snooped on Sam’s GPS, it had 1281 Valley Green Rd, Philadeliphia with a timestamp of 7:02pm on the 29th. It also has 718 Crown St, New Haven at 2:48am on the 30th, so I guess that’s the time he started heading back to Yale. I dunno if we’ve been given any addresses in the show previously, like the exact location of the party Lila was at the night she died? But regardless, we now know that Sam did head back to Philly on that night, but I dunno if he’s too obvious of a choice to be the one who killed Lila?
Connor. He’s such a…words I can’t say on this forum. Seriously, he’s horrible, but I started to feel some sympathy for him in that moment when Pax jumped out the window. I think that’s the first time Connor has ever seen a real life implication of how his screwing around can wreck people. And when whatshername was yelling at Pax about how the family that rejected him before would finally have a real reason to be ashamed of him, Connor’s expression was kinda like he felt bad for Pax because he’s been through something similar. Maybe that’s why he got sent to boarding school, because his family wanted to get rid of him? I hope we get to learn some more about his backstory to see how he ended up being so cold and emotionally detatched. Was so happy when Oliver kicked him out, and I get the impression that they didn’t see each other again for those 7 weeks until the night of the murder when Manic!Connor showed up at Oliver’s door. The guy playing Connor is doing a great job of portraying him falling apart.
Wes. I really can’t decide if he really did start out as doe eyed as he appeared, or if he’s playing some game, or what his motivations are on the night of the murder. He lied about the coin toss to force everyone to go back and move the body. I saw a tumblr post that pointed out how he had a little bit of a smile in the car when Connor was freaking out, which I dunno if that’s really a thing, but something else they mentioned is how Wes is the only one who had his mouth and nose covered when they were smashing up Sam’s remains, and how that means Wes wasn’t breathing in any potentially incriminating ashes, which was smart. But it’s not like he advised the rest of them to do the same, so if that’s what he had his face covered for, he’s just looking out for himself there, which is kinda contrary to other stuff we’ve seen about him being concerned with helping people. Like Rebecca, so is he being extra cautious because he doesn’t wanna get lumped in with the rest of them because he wants to be able to run off and be with Rebecca when all this is over? Or is he somehow playing everyone and there’ll be a twist that he’s some kinda psychopath? They have made a point of having Annlise say that you never really know how well you know people. And we now know that Wes didn’t reveal the phone at first so he could earn Rebecca’s trust, so is he possibly stringing everyone else along so they trust him as well? Or is he really just a good guy trying to make the best of a crappy situation and protect a girl he likes?
Annalise. Viola Davis had better get all the awards for this role, because she’s freaking awesome, the way she portrays Annalise’s invincible self at work, and then her emotional wreck of a self when she’s in private. That character is so compelling, I just love her.

It’s interesting because we see Rebecca in the house with Sam’s body when the law school gang comes in. Rebecca looks traumatized so I wonder if she killed Sam, but I don’t think they would spoil it this early. Honestly, I still think it’s Annalise.

I thought Asher might be dead until this weeks episode!!!! He starts banging on the door and it’s like, “oh…so you didn’t bite it??” But why wasn’t he with the gang?
Basically, these kids are so screwed. LOL
LOL. Smile or go to jail!

Bonnie is…interesting. Is she in love with Sam? Certainly reads that way.

Some of us were saying the same thing last night…lol

YEEEEEEEES. Taking off her hair and makeup last night and just crying….GAH!! LOVE HER

1) Don’t really like Michelea but I think that is because I was exactly like her: wound too tight and obsessive.
2) How did Asher even get the trophy because thus far, he seems to be the worst of the bunch, smarts wise. Even Wes has managed to get some things.
3) Connor had a pretty intense reaction to the fact that Pax’s family rejected him because of his homosexuality. I think Connor has the same issues with his family.
4) My leading theory right now is that Sam killed Lila and Rebecca knows. Sam will somehow get away with it and Rebecca goes to the house to confront him. Sam tries to hurt Rebecca but Annalise steps in and kills Sam with the trophy of justice (poetic!). But where is Annalise now…?
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"October 17, 2014 at 1:09 pm #285868PheeParticipantBonnie is…interesting. Is she in love with Sam? Certainly reads that way.
She totally seems to be crushing on Sam, but then she also seems pretty fiercely loyal to Annalise as well. Like, if Bonnie walked in on Sam going off on Annalise, what would Bonnie do? Or if she walked in on Sam going off on Rebecca even? We need more info on Bonnie before we could say for sure how she’d react, I guess. Was she a student of Annalise’s too? Or a client? (I feel I’ve used WAY too many question marks in this thread. LOL)
Don’t really like Michelea
In the murder situation, I’d totally be the Michaela, completely losing it right from the getgo. But girlfriend lost me when she was all, “My bespoke Vera Wang wedding gown cost a frillion dollars so don’t you dare embarrass me or I’ll destroy you.” Priorities, honey, you’re doing it wrong.
How did Asher even get the trophy because thus far, he seems to be the worst of the bunch,
I’m so curious to find out how he gets to the head of the pack. I did like his excitement over getting to play at being a spy, but generally I’m “meh” on him.
I think Connor has the same issues with his family.
As much of an *expletive* as Connor is, I think there’s gotta be some reasons for it. Maybe his parents sent him away because they couldn’t deal with him being gay, and he was taken advantage of by a teacher who preyed on his vulnerable state of mind, and he didn’t tell anyone, instead turned it around and has used sex as his own control mechanism over people ever since. Even though he first came across as a cold person who just uses people, I’m now starting to get the sense that there’s much more to learn about him and there’s a lot of potential for character growth.
That’s the thing, would Annalise just up and leave Sam lying there? I guess that allows for someone else to find him and contaminate the crime scene. One of the first rules is to establish another suspect, and if other people had the opportunity to be present, that’d make it easier for her to get away with it. But would she wanna set the kids up like that? She’s hardcore with them, but I don’t think she’s uncaring, it’s a tough love thing to make them work harder. Maybe she expected Bonnie or Frank to show up instead and she wouldn’t be that upset by framing either of them, and it just happened that the kids got there first?
I saw a theory somewhere online a week or so ago that the whole thing was done by Annalise as their exam, which would be an awesome dark twist, but I dunno that she’d go so far as to murder her husband as a means to testing her students.
October 17, 2014 at 6:58 pm #285929JosephineParticipantYou know what hurts my brain the most? Getting all the names straight. I call them all the wrong names. 😛 I think I’ve broken myself of constantly referring to Wes as “Dean Thomas” (Potterheads who know the movies understand), but I really need to break myself of my nicknames of the others.
I was so exhausted last night that I should have just taped it. I did watch but I don’t know how much I retained . I’ll have to go back over and reread the insights after, as I’ve just woken up from a nap and haven’t had dinner yet so I’m still in a brain fog. But I will add that another thing missing besides the scales on the statue (Is that supposed to be poetic? Justice is no longer balanced and fair?) is PromQueen’s engagement ring. She didn’t mention it this week that I remember but last week she did. It’s gone and we, and she, have no idea where it’s at.
Added: After rereading back up PromQueen’s name is Michaela. I seriously have a problem.

October 18, 2014 at 9:45 pm #286045heatherc1275ParticipantUGH, this show is so addicting and I’m glad we have a thread here to talk about it! I don’t have much to add right now but apparently we’re getting a Laurel episode this coming week (the quiet girl) so I’m very interested in finding out more about her. I think her story with Frank may answer a few of the question we’re all having right now! 😮
BTW-TV Line picked Viola Davis as their performer of the week. VIOLA FOR ALL THE AWARDS!! 😀
#MoreBOOMLessGloomOctober 19, 2014 at 3:30 am #286084PheeParticipantI’m all about finding out more about Laurel, but I hope it doesn’t involve her getting with Frank because he’s a creepy creeper.
October 23, 2014 at 10:59 pm #287125RumplesGirlKeymasterTaking notes while watching
–Laurel slept with Frank before the murder.
–Sam was sleeping with Lila. Knew it
–Annalise was Sam’s mistress once?!?!?!? Ooooooh. Plot thickens. What was Annalise’s “problems” when Sam “found her?”
–“Grace Kelly and I have tea together. Quite often” ROFL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
–Nice use of the blog to get the abuse into the court!
–Oooof. Cold Nate telling Annalise that he lied about Sam.
–Is there more to Frank than just being a ….word I can’t say? He almost seems nice?
–Ooooh Laurel did a naughty with the Jury. But again Frank keeps her secret. I get the feeling that he’s actually not a bad guy.
–Annalise’s purple outfit and matching coat. Grabby hands.
–Okay Sam didn’t kill Lila. And Rebecca didn’t kill Lila. Maybe it was the boyfriend, really? Or maybe it was really Rebecca…she does have a high IQ…
WHO THE HECK KILLED LILA?!?!?!
–Ok won’t lie. Frank and Laurel? Kinda hot.
–Empty convenient library is empty and convenient
–Wallpaper….? Oh okay. So now Wes knows that Sam was on the phone.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"October 23, 2014 at 11:36 pm #287129JosephineParticipantYou said more there than you did all night 😛
I waffle over who killed Lila and Keeting. I’m feeling that Annalise killed her husband and is setting up her students to take the fall.
I also wonder, since this series is only 13 episodes and they’ll wrap some stuff up, what next season will entail. Another class of students? Fallout from the deaths? How will this show go on after season one?

October 24, 2014 at 4:20 am #287139PheeParticipantDuring the Sam/Rebecca scene I honestly couldn’t figure out if they already knew each other or not, so it’s good to have that properly clarified by the end of the ep. You could tell that SOMETHING would come from her having gone upstairs in that house, but the wallpaper twist totally blindsided me, so cool.
One thing I’ve been wondering about is how for most of them there on murder night it’s no biggie if they leave prints and DNA all over, because they’re there all the time anyway, but Rebecca was the exception. Now that’s been taken care of, because she’s been there too. Unless there’s particular stuff she touched on murder night that can’t be written off as something from when she was there previously.
Wes keeps getting in deeper with the stuff that none of the other kids know. Are they all still oblivious by murder night?
The revelation that Sam and Annalise met when she was his mistress, GAH, I love this show for making my eyes bug out in the first freaking act of an ep. I’m so curious now to know what Annalise was like back then. Wonder if maybe he evaluated her similar to how she got him to evaluate Rebecca? If so perhaps that was part of her tactic in forcing that meeting, because she knows his weakness can be revealed a situation like that?
Confirmation that Bonnie is just hot for Sam, and Annalise can’t stand her. Feels like a “keep your enemies closer” type thing, like by keeping Bonnie in that position it was insurance that Sam wouldn’t cheat with her. But he still cheated with someone else.
Was kinda surprised that Nate told her the truth so soon, was expecting that to be drawn out a bit longer.
Where (and when) is Michaela’s ring gonna turn up?
Even though Connor is a sleaze, and I wanna slap him because of poor Oliver, I can’t help but be impressed by how profecient he is with his sleazing.
Laurel, dude, you have a perfectly hot, perfectly smart, perfectly sweet boyfriend, so why with the Frank thing? It’s so twisted that she’s gonna drag him into the post-murder shenanigans now, like she’s punishing him for having slept with her as misplaced blame for her own decision to sleep with him. What exactly is she gonna ask him to do? Is she gonna go all out and try to frame Frank for the murder? If so I’m gonna end up feeling sorry for Frank, and I dunno if I wanna have sympathy for him, so I’m all confused.
Also on Laurel, she actually referred to herself a as murderer in this ep. I’m gonna guess we shouldn’t just take that statement as fact though, and she really means she’s just a part of the whole murder situation, because I can’t see them revealing who whacked Sam just like that.
Even though I question Laurel’s dating practices, that was a ballsy move with slipping the info to the juror and I love how determined she was to help the kid stay outta jail.
The crime of the week seemed so impossible to win and I had no idea how they’d get out of it. Love the way that all played out, I just wanna stand and applaud every time Annalise works the system. I loved how genuinely happy she was when she was telling them that he wasn’t gonna go to jail.
I also wonder, since this series is only 13 episodes and they’ll wrap some stuff up, what next season will entail. Another class of students? Fallout from the deaths? How will this show go on after season one?
Didn’t they get some more eps added to the order recently? *googles* They did get a couple more but the full season is still just 15 eps…
The size of HTGAWM’s pickup stems from the deal for star Viola Davis. Like other top movie actors who sign on for broadcast series, including The Following‘s Kevin Bacon, they only agree if the order is limited, so they can also pursue feature projects. No doubt that if it could’ve, ABC would’ve gladly ordered 22 episodes from the red-hot drama. X
But yeah, it’s a good question, what would S2 be about? Assuming they have plans for a S2 and possibly beyond, that’s a thing that keeps me from thinking Annalise killed Sam, because they’d have to have her guilty of murder, but getting off, and still practicing law after having been charged, potentially with first degree murder, which…I dunno if they could pull that off in a believable way?
