Every Dark One has tried to get the hat and Rumple is the only one to succeed. What does he want with it? Is it to take all the magic he possibly can and use it for his own ends? Or is it for some other reason?

Rumples addiction to magic, having a hat that seals away magical beings also stealing their powers, and Regina being the most powerful witch he ever trained….all I could say was “RUN REGINA!! RUN!!!!”

If he gets enough magic, he can be free of the dagger’s control–the chief limit to his powers. He can be free and keep his powers.

I had an epiphany. My main issue with Rumple as of late is not knowing what his current motivation is, but now knowing at least somewhat why he wants the hat and looking back at what’s happened, I think I have some idea. He wants the hat so nobody can control him with the dagger ever again, right? Well, if Rumple still has some goodness left in him, I think he wants that for a reason other than just wanting more power. Perhaps Rumple simply doesn’t want his powers being used against those he cares about such as Belle and Henry? After all, we saw Rumple being controlled by Zelena all last Spring, including using his powers against people he cares about. I would think that experience would make Rumple tempted by the hat’s powers again more than anything. However, that would mean he’s once again using the wrong choices for “a good cause.” He doesn’t want anybody he cares about in danger, but in turn he’s creating more problems as a result.
Rumple plan follows into the category that some reforming and I use the term loosely, villains fall into the best if both world scenario, the chance to be free, have power and love.

I think it’s the other way around: the Dark One wants to be free of its human host. I think it’s most likely that the Dark One entity wants to die, and that it’s long been manipulating its hosts to this end, just like its hosts — when their burden becomes too great — trick others into taking up tne power and the curse of the dagger.

That’s an interesting idea, the Dark One curse wanting to be free. It gives me an idea: What if the Sorcerer created the hat to catch the Dark One curse? Rumple said the hat “steals” magic, as if the Sorcerer were some evil entity, but his Apprentice was such a nice guy, I don’t think we can assume that. Maybe it does steal magic, as a side effect, but the original intention was to eradicate the Dark Curse or to contain it? And this is making kind of a leap here, but if that’s true, this venture might not end so well for Rumplestiltskin… What if it’s a trap?
If the hat steals magic, and in turn entraps the magical beings, turning them into stars, that must mean that there are a LOT of magical beings in that hat. How much magic does it need to recharge?
Anyway, I agree that he probably wants a way to sever the dagger’s control over him and his magic, you know, without having to die in the process. I also have a sneaking suspicion that the hat is going to be used to put an end to the Dairy Queen’s shenanigans (as much as I’m hoping she’ll be ‘saved’ by love).
