I like analyzing things, looking for parallels and symbolism, and various meanings.  And I also tend to obsess over music, and song lyrics.

So I thought it would be fun to think of song lyrics that remind us of OUAT, and share what characters, ships, or stories they remind us of.  🙂

Regarding episode 4×05 “Breaking Glass”, and the many references to the symbolism of mirrors.

There is so much symbolism regarding mirrors, so I was trying to think if I knew any songs that referred to mirrors or glass in the lyrics.  I thought I must have heard some!

    Then I remembered this one:

    Jack Savoretti – Broken Glass

Broken glass on the floor by my bed
    Lying next to books
    I’ve never even read

Wide awake, all the mess that I made
    Everything I’ve taken
    you’re the one who paid

    Forget what I have done
    Sometimes I’ve lost you
    Sometimes I’ve won

    Just let me do
    Everything I can
‘Cause everything I do is for you

There’s a darkness to my shadow on the wall
Every time I try to stand
    That’s when I fall

There’s a fever burning deep in my bones
    Even when I’m with you
    I’m on my own

    Forget what I have done
    Sometimes I’ve lost you
    Sometimes I’ve won

    Just let me do
    Everything I can
‘Cause everything I do is for you

Mmm, I do it all for you

You’re the lighthouse when I’m lost at sea
    You’re my band-aid when I bleed
Am I hypnotizing you, like you’re hypnotizing me

    Forget what I have done
    Sometimes I’ve lost you
    Sometimes I’ve won

    Just let me do
    Everything I can
‘Cause everything I do is for you

I do it all for you

Broken glass on the floor by my bed
    Lying next to books
    I’ve never even read

Wide awake, all the mess that I made
    Everything I’ve taken
    you’re the one who paid

So, who’s story does the song make you think of?  I can’t seem to decide.  I can think of several POVs that go with some of the lyrics, or even most, but not quite the whole song.

So here’s how I see it.  The different characters all take turns singing the song, each singing only the verses that are relevant to them.  And the same lines take on a different meaning, with each character who sings them.

I see quite a lot of Rumple in most of the song, but I can’t tell if he is speaking to Bae or to Belle, or to both.  Or maybe in turns.

But look at how sinister this verse becomes, if it comes from the Dairy Queen!

    Forget what I have done
    Sometimes I’ve lost you
    Sometimes I’ve won

    😮

So, what do you all think?  What or who do you see the song referring to?

Do you have any other songs that speak to this episode, or this season?

Bumping the thread, now that it’s for all of season 4.  😎

Any thoughts on the song I posted?  Or other songs?

SFG! This is a brilliant thread, and the song Broken Glass really does set the mood when thinking of Season 4 so far. I especially feel that this song really represents Ice Queen Ingrid more than anything else! And I can definitely hear Ingrid’s icy voice telling Emma to forget what she’s done! Spot on!!!!!!!

For some reason with this upcoming episode, I’ve got a real Oops I Did It Again (by Brittany Spears) vibe off Belle concerning the sneak peek with Rumple. Not the whole song, but just this verse!

Oops!…I did it again to your heart
Got lost in this game, oh baby
Oops!…You think that I’m sent from above
    I’m not that innocent

Considering Belle plans to you know what to Rumple…..

    Thank you WickedRegal! 😀

And, you are so completely right about those lyrics coming from Ingrid! I hadn’t seen the complete lyrics as fitting any one character, but since you pointed it out, I do completely see it as Ingrid’s POV. 😎

And now, looking at it again knowing what we have learned of Ingrid’s past, with Helga, it seems even more perfect. And sad. 🙁

Like this verse, is when she is most afraid of hurting her sisters. Keeping her distance, watching the ball from afar, etc.

There’s a fever burning deep in my bones
    Even when I’m with you
    I’m on my own

And the lines about the lighthouse and the bandaid, that is the three sisters protecting and supporting each other, before things went wrong. 🙁

Though I still see some of the other fragmented meanings that I had noticed before.

This pair of verses for example:

There’s a darkness to my shadow on the wall
Every time I try to stand
    That’s when I fall

There’s a fever burning deep in my bones
    Even when I’m with you
    I’m on my own

The first makes me think of both Rumple and Regina, telling of their seperate struggles with their darker tendencies. Every time they try to be better people, or to make better lives for themselves, they get knocked down again.

And with that second verse, I think of Rumple. He loves Belle, but he cannot shake his yearning for power. And that makes him feel alone, because it is a selfish desire that he cannot escape.

    And then this verse:

    Forget what I have done
    Sometimes I’ve lost you
    Sometimes I’ve won

    Just let me do
    Everything I can
‘Cause everything I do is for you

This speaks to the stories of several different couples: Snowing, Rumbelle, and maybe even Swanfire. Any of the devoted couples on the show, who’s stories involve repeatedly losing and finding each other again. 🙂 It seems to be a common thread on the show, doesn’t it?

Here’s another song. I was obsessed with this song when I discovered it a year or so ago, and watched the vid over and over again. 🙂

The video itself doesn’t have much to do with Once, but I will include it along with the lyrics, because I think it is just the most adorable thing! (And I love the vintage special effects. They are too much fun! 😀 )

    “Thieves”
    By SHE & HIM
    Writer(s): Zooey Deschanel
    —

There’s thieves among us, painting the walls
With all kinds of lies, and lies I never told at all

What’s in my pocket, you never knew
You didn’t know me well so well as I knew you

And I know and you know too
A love like ours is terrible news

But that won’t stop me crying
No that won’t stop me crying over you

    I’m not a prophet
    Old love is in me
New love just seeps right in
    And it makes me guilty

Why do you look like that?
    It’s not all that bad
    I’ll see you sometime
    Sometimes lonely isn’t sad

And I know and you know too
A love like ours is terrible news

But that won’t stop me crying
No that won’t stop me crying over you
No that won’t stop me crying over you

We two are makers just made this mess
Two broken hearts don’t beat any less

There’s thieves among us, painting the walls
With all kinds of lies, and lies I never told at all

And I know and you know too
A love like ours is terrible news

But that won’t stop me crying
No that won’t stop me crying over you
No that won’t stop me crying over you
No that won’t stop me crying over you, you, you

This song reminds me of how Robin and Regina’s relationship has been complicated by Marion’s return.

Someone’s happy ending is being stolen, but who’s? And who are the thieves? Is it Robin and Regina? Or Robin and Marion? And is the song from the POV of the thieves?

The song captures beatifully how bittersweet all of this is. What Robin and Regina have is powerful. Is it right? Is it wrong? Is it doomed? At some point none of that matters, as it hurts just as much to lose.

And maybe the “thieves” are not people at all, but the very situations that bring so many obstacles into all these people’s lives.

And I think the “lies I never told”, could be this: Before Marion showed up, the secret hanging between Robin and Regina was that she had killed Marion. He didn’t know, and yet, she had not lied to him, because she did not realize it either!

This verse is clearly Robin, plain as day:

    I’m not a prophet
    Old love is in me
New love just seeps right in
    And it makes me guilty

And when I hear this verse, I picture every time Regina told Robin to stay away from her, to leave her alone and be with Marion instead:

Why do you look like that?
    It’s not all that bad
    I’ll see you sometime
    Sometimes lonely isn’t sad

    And this verse just speaks:

We two are makers just made this mess
Two broken hearts don’t beat any less

So, isn’t Zooey just an awsome singer, and songwriter as well? 😀

Here’s another one of my favorite songs. After the winter finale, I noticed that this song felt to me like it speaks to Belle’s current POV, and yet, is full of hope.

236-6132 is the number of my love
even though it’s been some time since he made fair to answer
’cause he feints and fades from view like a fighter ducks a glove
though i play the highway kind and he the china dancer

if i was afraid to break or bleed
i would find someone much easier to need
but when drifters’ dreams come true and when push comes ’round to shove
236-6132 is the number of my love

236-6132 is the number i must call
when casey’s at the bat, and sleeping beauty slumbers
when the frost is on the dew, and my teardrops freeze and fall
till the world is frozen flat, and the long night snows me under

on the icy nails of no return
we will strike the match and set the night to burn
’cause when beauty wakes anew and when casey cracks the ball
    236-6132 is the only number

i am not looking for no champion of my freedom
i am anything but anybody’s foundling
sometimes i feel like i am wandering
an old balloon on broken string
    a bubble in a baby’s dream
    a lost and lonely buzzardling
    a vulture beating creaky wings
while angry storms go gathering around me

236-6132 is the number of my love
when the clouds are howlin rain and the sky is black as ashes
’cause it’s sunlight where we flew, though the trail is cold above
and the raven quakes in vain while the lightning barks and flashes

still the clouds will fade to gray cocoons
and spring the winken monarchs, nodding never-blinken moons
when the crows come home to roost and the eagle weds the dove
236-6132 is the number of my love

This song feels so much like RumBelle to me, from Belle’s perspective.

It is a song about loving someone who is not easy to love. It speaks of the desolation and the tears of their long partings, only to make the inevitable reunions so much sweeter, in celebration.

The speaker in the song is not looking to be rescued by a hero, she is strong and independent. She still feels lost sometimes, adrift. But even when her love is not present, she knows he is her anchor, she knows they are still connected.

It is a song of much turbulence and turmoil, and yet, so much beauty. There is very much a feel of things happening in cycles. That each storm, no matter how bad, will always pass, and joy will return. 🙂

These lines in particular seem most relevant:

if i was afraid to break or bleed
i would find someone much easier to need

i am not looking for no champion of my freedom
i am anything but anybody’s foundling

And this passage is the most beautiful series of abstract descriptive lines. She is drifting, but knows she will find land again:

i am not looking for no champion of my freedom
i am anything but anybody’s foundling
sometimes i feel like i am wandering
an old balloon on broken string
    a bubble in a baby’s dream
    a lost and lonely buzzardling
    a vulture beating creaky wings
while angry storms go gathering around me

And this is them right now, after the winter finale. It hurts, but this storm will end, as all storms end:

when the clouds are howlin rain and the sky is black as ashes
’cause it’s sunlight where we flew, though the trail is cold above
and the raven quakes in vain while the lightning barks and flashes

still the clouds will fade to gray cocoons
and spring the winken monarchs, nodding never-blinken moons
when the crows come home to roost and the eagle weds the dove
236-6132 is the number of my love

And this, might just sum up the whole thing:

    the eagle weds the dove

So I have one, its currently my fave song by a really talented Viner named “Ruth B”, anyway, the song is called “Lost Boy”

There was a time when I was Alone
No where to go and no place to call home
My only friend was the man in the moon
And even sometimes he would go away too

Then one night, as I closed my eyes
I saw a shadow flying high
He came to me with the sweetest smile
Told me he wanted to talk for awhile
He said… Peter Pan that’s what they call me
I promise that you’ll never be lonely
    And ever since that day…

I am a lost boy from Neverland
Usually hanging out with Peter Pan
And when we’re bored we play in the Woods
Always on the run from Captain Hook

Run run lost boy, they say to me
    Away from all of reality
Neverland is home to lost boys like me
And lost boys like me are free

He sprinkled me in pixie dust and told me to believe
Believe in him and believe in me
Together we will fly away in a cloud of green
    To your beautiful destiny

As we soared above the town that never loved me
    I realized I finally had a family
    Soon enough we reached Neverland
Peacefully my feet hit the sand and ever since that day…

I am a lost boy from Neverland
Usually hanging out with Peter Pan
And when we’re bored we play in the Woods
Always on the run from Captain Hook

Run run lost boy, they say to me
    Away from all of reality
Neverland is home to lost boys like me
And lost boys like me are free

Peter Pan, Tinker Bell, Wendy darlin
Even Captain Hook you are my perfect story book
Neverland I love you so, you are now my home sweet home
Forever a lost boy at last

Peter Pan, Tinker Bell, Wendy darlin
Even Captain Hook you are my perfect story book
Neverland I love you so, you are now my home sweet home
Forever a lost boy at last… And for always I will say

I am a lost boy from Neverland
Usually hanging out with Peter Pan
And when we’re bored we play in the Woods
Always on the run from Captain Hook

Run run lost boy, they say to me
    Away from all of reality
Neverland is home to lost boys like me
And lost boys like me are free

Neverland is home to lost boys like me
And lost boys like me are free

So to me this song reminds me of OUAT because it kind of goes along with what I thought Neverland would have been like for Henry. They only barely touched on it but still. The song is about this boy who doesn’t really feel at home in his own home and then suddenly he is whisked off to this magical land by a shadow to have all sorts of adventures. Obviously, the song is inspired by OUAT. The part about being SPECIFICALLY a SHADOW that takes the boy to Neverland as opposed to an actual human child is what happens in OUAT and even the part about flying in a cloud of green mist is what happens to Pan and Henry. Oddly enough, I know for a fact that in youtube version of the song, Ruth actually sings the word “Storybrooke” instead of StoryBook but in the ITunes version she changed it to Story book for reasons I suppose. Anyway, this song is a really nice song and she has tons of other fairytale inspired music on her vine page for all u viners out there (vine is a video app thing. Think youtube, but all videos are only 6 seconds long).

So this song, called “Why Cruella, Why” was written by a girl I know, Patrisia. She wrote it a couple years ago, and all the talk of Cruella, Mal, and Ursula made me think of it. Right now, we don’t know much about Cruella’s background, but I’d be interested to see if her relationship with any of the characters fits well with this song.

Here’s the link to Patrisia singing it, if you want to check it out. The video quality isn’t great, but she has a very good voice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5f1L6Vm07Zc

“Don’t you love to see me fail?
If it was storming out, would you leave me in the hail?
When the tough gets going would you rescue me?
Are you only around when there are perks because that’s how it seems to be.

When no one else is around, we talk all the time
We connect, we relate, and even laugh
But when your people come back to you
Its like I’m invisible, but there’s nothing I can do

When push comes to shove I could tell
You will be my Cruella de vil
And I know its foolish, but I can’t handle
All of the constant acts of evil
    So why Cruella, why?

You laugh at me and put me down
You play with my emotions and spread lies all over town
I know your plots to ruin me
Yes it is sad, but I guess it was meant to be

Oh the things you do make me think of you with so much pain in my heart
You’re like night and day I can’t tell if being a lie is your art
The lies and manipulation………..I just can’t bare
It’s so pathetic that most of the time I swear

When push comes to shove I could tell
You will be my Cruella de Vil
and I know its foolish but I cant handle
all of the constant acts of evil
    So why Cruella, why?
I know your jokes are not sincere
All this resentment is not supposed to be here
The only way for me to make the torture end will be when I ask
    Why Cruella, Why?

When push comes to shove I could tell
You will be my Cruella de Vil
And I know its foolish, but I cant handle
All of the constant acts of evil
    So Why Cruella, Why?”
