Births & Deaths

Through episode 406, I’ve cataloged 149 “named” characters that have been introduced on Once. (I’m not counting Wonderland at this time, though obviously Will’s counted here.) (quotes around named because sometimes the name is “so-and-so’s father” or “blind witch”)

Of those, we’ve witnessed (or nearly witnessed–I’m counting an ep where they are newborns even if we didn’t actually see birthing pains) the birth of 16 of them.

We’ve also witnessed the deaths (or near deaths–sleeping curse counts, because it flatlines/results in coffins etc) of approximately 56.

Of those, 48 are still dead.

This doesn’t count extras, villagers, guards, soldiers, etc, who just wind up dead, but it does count people who have some kind of line/specific role.

Basically, if you’re on Once, there’s about a 1 in 3 chance you’re gonna die. On screen. Giving your relatives trauma and motivation, of course.

If you die, there’s about a 15% chance you’ll be revived somehow. (and a much greater chance you’ll still show up in flashbacks–I haven’t analyzed that rate because it’s less relevant.)
