Rumple’s been on what he must believe is a winning streak. He thinks he CAN have everything–Belle, his grandson, his power–and get it easily by destroying the people he hates most. Win-win all around for him, and if it costs the rest of his grandson’s family and the town too…oh well. (And he doesn’t even have to destroy Emma. Not a whole lot on his conscious then–he clearly had mixed feelings about using her, but the fairies? that’s like telling him he has to kill Hook–it’s Christmas for Rumple!)
But we know he’s not going to get away with it. It’s all too easy, for one thing. We don’t yet know why that hat was just sitting there for him to discover, and he, apparently, isn’t worried about it. He should be. Someone has been setting him up for SOMETHING.
When this falls apart, a lot of people have been focusing on what Belle’s going to do–leave him, forgive him, both, slap him silly, etc…but there’s going to be a LOT more fallout now. When it was just the apprentice, Rumple was pretty safe. He had Hook nicely blackmailed into a tight corner, and plenty of alibis to go around.
Now, however, Hook has no reason to not turn against him if he lives, AND he knows every diabolical thing that Rumple’s been doing. Hook’s life is a major liability; Rumple hasn’t been worried about that because he plans to end it anyway, and has the means to do so. So the question is, should the hat be destroyed/taken from him and Hook survive (which I fully expect to happen For Reasons), how in the heck is Rumple going to get away with any of it?
First off, I now expect that the fairies will be back, and the apprentice too. That will mitigate the harm Rumple did somewhat, but they’re not going to be happy with him.
So some options Rumple might have:
–Remove memories–Hook’s most importantly. Right now, the blame for the fairies’ disappearance is on Ingrid; if Rumple can persuade everyone that Ingrid was controlling Hook, he might escape his judgement this time. There’s reason to believe he can remove memories–he commented on Ingrid’s ability, there’s a spell in the book that Regina used, and in the cut scene he told Henry he could do that but wouldn’t. Other cut scenes they’ve shown us turned out to be relevant down the line; this may be too.
–Persuade Hook not to tell everyone the truth. This is going to be a hard one. However, now that we know where the Jolly Roger is in present time, it’s back in play. It’s possible that Rumple could make a deal with Hook for his ship. I’m not sure that would be sufficient, but depending on how things go down, Hook -might- sympathize with the crocodile. I know, that sounds ridiculous, but the way that he warned Rumple in 409 about having to choose between Belle’s love and his power, I almost got the feeling that he’s seeing parallels between his own past and where Rumple is right now. (It’s close to where Hook was in the latter half of S2 in a lot of ways, and also bears a resemblance to where he was in the flashback of 317 when he tried to kill Black Beard–who was in the ep to remind us of that parallel.) Right now, Hook has zero reason to sympathize with Rumple, and yet he wasn’t just pleading for his own life there. The conversation on the dock, too, makes me think that Hook was not just aghast at Rumple’s disregard for everyone save his immediate family, but recognizing that he’d have done the same thing in certain points of his own past. What kind of grand gesture it’s going to take Rumple to get Hook’s very loose sympathies to work in his favor, though, I’m not sure–even the JR doesn’t seem like it would be enough to stop present Hook from warning Emma & Belle that Rumple’s not a Good Guy.

December 1, 2014 at 10:55 am #291855KebParticipantAlso, extraneous thought: “I don’t have time for everyone else.” Rumple’s been so done with the whole Rumple Routine since the first time he thought his son was dead. It served him well in the EF…but now he’s tired of everyone running to him for help all the time. He’ll still make deals, on his own terms, but…he’s just DONE.
Still. What’s he in a hurry to do? I get that he wants to get his power and get out of there before DQ’s plans come to fruition, but why? He’s got an exclusion for his family, he’s immortal, and he’s got almost everything he needs to keep his power. And he’s not stopping DQ…why?
There -has- to be something more to either his plans or his relationship with DQ.

December 1, 2014 at 11:18 am #291857CindersParticipantThere’s also the theory that Rumple is NOT against the residents of Storybrook. Rumple may have wanted Emma in the hat to protect her against a dangerous, cursed Hook. But, since Emma chose not to use the hat, Rumple had to go with plan B, which was to remove Hook’s heart, thereby making him immune from the curse, which would, in turn, save Emma from cursed Pirate Hook.
He needs the hat to save himself from the dagger, which is why he sucked up the fairies, but he may be depending on Emma, Elsa to save the town.
December 1, 2014 at 11:27 am #291860CindersParticipantAlso, lets not forget that Anna knows much of Rumple’s plans with that hat. Further, Anna is immune from this curse, and is friends with Belle. Won’t Anna be surprised to find that sweet Belle is married to Rumple. Anna is unafraid of the wrath of Rumple because he is still bound by her dagger~command that he not harm her or Elsa. She wont be afraid to tell the truths she’s learned about Rumple.
December 1, 2014 at 11:46 am #291864KebParticipantThat’s…awful convoluted as a theory. I mean, the straightforward explanations make a lot more sense and seem in tune with his character. Why would he save the fairies or Hook? Or stop the fairies from making a cure if he didn’t want their power for himself?

Crap is about to hit the fan for Rumple. I don’t think Rumple is going to get away with it, despite his best efforts. Nor do I think Rumple will be able to control Hook indefinitely, since in all likelihood, Hook will get his heart back. Unlike Hook, who has the perfect excuse for a lot of the bad stuff he did (“the crocodile made me do it”), Rumple has no excuse other than his own cowardice and lust for power. The fallout for Rumple will put his marriage in jeopardy, because he still hasn’t learned that he simply cannot have it all. Hook is right insofar as Rumple cannot have both power and love. He is going to have to choose. By trying to have unlimited power without any accountability, the choice will be made for him, because the more he clings to power, the more likely it is Belle will leave him. And we know Hook is skilled at survival, so likely Rumple is going to let him go when Belle finds out (probably from Anna) what Rumple’s real goal is with that dagger. I think Belle is about to find out about the fake dagger, and her own suspicions about the dagger being a fake will be confirmed when she tries to command Rumple with it again. I think Belle will try and control Rumple again, probably in an attempt to save everyone.
Point of clarification: Are Belle and Henry also immune to the spell of shattered sight thanks to the deal Rumple made with Ingrid?

December 1, 2014 at 2:02 pm #291887WickedRegalParticipantUnbelievable man!!!! I swear…I love Rumple from the bottom of my heart, but we must call out hypocrisy when it’s there!
He told Regina in 2×17 that she couldn’t have everything, her vengeance or Henry was the only option she had! Oh but it’s all well and good when he wants everything….he got his vengeance on Zelena, Belle is blind to his sins, Henry has no idea what’s happening, and he’s storing up magic in that hat! Though I must say that I did applaud Rumple for sucking Shady Blue up, so we’re just going to take the fairies out of the equation, and just leave the Sorcerer’s Apprentice being sucked in. 🙂
But seriously Rumple….clean up your act!

I think Rumple was right when he told Regina that, however he has now fallen into the same trap as she did. He wants everything, thinks he can, but is going to run the risk of losing it all. It would be nice if Regina could remind him of that piece of advice he gave her and perhaps pull him back from the brink before it all blows up in his face.
All magic comes with a price!
Keeper of FelixDecember 5, 2014 at 10:02 am #292192obisgirlParticipantI hope Rumple doesn’t get away with his shenanigans. He seriously needs to pay, dearly.
He still hasn’t learned that you can’t have everything.
I watched the episode last night, the spell is here now and it brings out the worst in people. Maybe Shattered Belle uses the kris dagger again to summon Rumple but when Rumple doesn’t show when she calls him but much much later after the spell is broken, Belle slaps her husband in the face. Because she knows he’s been lying to her now. Slap him, then separate from him because the relationship now, I can’t fathom Belle staying with him after all Rumple’s done.
I think by the winter finale, it will be the town vs. Rumple.
