When Snow and Charming first run into Maleficent in this episode’s flashback, I noticed that Maleficent told Charming “I was afraid you wouldn’t recognize me.” Is this their way of acknowledging that she was wearing a different outfit back when we originally saw her encounter with Charming in Season 1? My headcanon in regards to the outfit change is that, like Regina, Maleficent has different outfits. The purple outfit she wore in Season 1 could simply be her loungewear, as both scenes with her in Season 1 were when Charming and Regina had met up with her while she was lounging about at home. Yes we all know the real reason for the outfit change was to make Maleficent more resemble the classic Disney design, but in regards to a in-show answer, that’s what I’ve got.

In fact, Eduardo Castro mentioned in an interview a while back that he was actually not fully satisfied with his original Maleficent outfit, in particular the headpiece (1:27 in). :

LOL. I personally prefer the pink/purple outfit. Its very original and has a unique take for Mal. I would say its probably her lounge wear as well but when Ursula and Cruella showed up she was wearing her black outfit. So unless she was out villaining it up before they got there I think the answer is they just wanted her to wear something closer yo the Disney (read: Angelina Jolie) version.

I think it was more a reference to how the last time Charming got a good up close look at her, she looked like a dragon. It’s also a way for them to have Maleficent acknowledge that she recognises Charming as the guy who stuffed the egg in her.

Agreed. Though I get a bit obsessive about purple, so anything purple instantly trumps all else in my book.

Yeah, I agree. Mal was reminding Charming (and the audience) that she was the dragon in whom the egg with true love potion was so obtrusively placed in her. Exactly where in her the egg was placed is a question best left up to the imagination though, seeing how Mal became pregnant shortly afterwards.

I’m starting to think of Mal’s outfits as kind of like Regina’s outfits. They reflect her mood.
