So there are several obvious clues that August either knew the author, or at least knew something about who they are. He added his story to the book, he knew that Neal was Baelfire, and he traveled around with a typewriter.

But I think the connection may go much deeper than that. Here is my theory:

So, wood from enchanted trees have been important several times in the history of the show. The wardrobe that tranported Emma and Pinocchio was made from an enchanted tree. Pinocchio himself was made from an enchanted tree, that’s how he was alive in the first place before he became a real boy. And in the last episode “Unforgiven” we saw a “Tree of Wisdom”, which seemed to contain knowledge.

So first, I wonder if the paper in Henry’s book was made from a magical tree, and that is why it contains knowledge?!?

Second, if magical trees contain knowledge, Pinocchio was made from a magical tree! So maybe that is how he has a connection to the author! And he may even contain knowledge that he is not even aware of!!! 😮

Maybe the author is actually the tree of Wisdom because the book was made from the tree of wisdom? Didn’t A&E say we would meet the author early on in season 4B? Everyone assumes the author is a he, possibly a she, but everyone is assuming it’s a person. The author being the tree of wisdom is something nobody would see coming.

It could also explain the missing page. Since the tree could sense the potential darkness in unborn Emma, it makes sense that it could also “know” the different outcome if Regina had met Robin in the tavern.

    Interesting theory @sci_fi_girl

Before this season, I remember theorizing that there was NO author.  The curse itself created Henry’s fairytale book. It’s kind of similar to this.

The problem though, is there is probably more than one book. Blue mentioned multiple works, and it seems likely that the special book in Oz was by the author as well. Didn’t Glinda say that it told the entire history of Oz, including the future?

But I still think there is some connection to Pinocchio via enchanted wood.

Someone refresh my memory because I haven’t re-watched in forever, but did Emma mention the Book to August, or did he already seem to know about it? I wanna say she mentioned it to him, (at the well maybe?), but I also think I might just be getting August mixed up with Graham? Or did Henry tell August about the Book before it “disappeared”?

I could see it if August knew nothing about the Book before coming to town, it’s just once he got there, heard about it, got it, then read through it looking for clues about who had created it, because maybe they could answer some questions for him about who had sent him the information about Neal being Bae. Maybe a similar Book had materialised for August, but it was a shorter book, that just had Nealfire’s story (both in FTL and in our world), and also a story about the creation of SB, which is how August knew where to look for SB, and how to track down Neal. Maybe the page with “Author?” on it isn’t even from Henry’s Book, maybe it’s from August’s own Book?

Well August knew about it because he told Henry that he knew the book told the truth. Henry flat out asks him, “what do you know about my book.” And August replies that they are more than just stories, or something. (it’s in Granny’s. Gosh…struggling to remember which episode). And I think that might be the episode where Emma finds it after the drink from the well.

OK…I went to look some stuff up.

In 1×11 “Fruit of the Posionous Tree”  the following happened (in order) (note: August is already in town from previous episode)

    –Henry buries the book

    –This conversation happens

    August: Whatcha working on?

Henry: Uh, no time to talk. I got to write it all down before I forget.

August: Yeah, I hate it when great ideas slip away from me.

Henry: They’re not my ideas. They’re stories from a book that I lost.

August: Must be a hell of a book. What’s it about?

    Henry: Stuff.

    August: Sounds exciting.

Henry: You seem awfully interested in me and my book.

–August takes the book from where Henry hid it (from the transcipt)

(August breaks the lock off of the metal box containing Henry’s book. He opens it and takes the book out.)

In 1×13 “What Happened to Frederick” the following happens (in order)

–Emma agrees to go with August to the Well

–We see August with the Book working on it (the following is part of the transcript write up)

(August is shown with Henry’s book. He has taken it apart and is treating each of the pages. Around the room, he has several of the pages hanging on a clothes line to dry. On the table, part of the book has already been rebound. August takes a dried page off of the line and adds it to the stack. He starts to rebind it with string.)

–They go to the Well and Drink

–Emma finds the Book while August watches (again transcript)

(Emma is brushing the leaves off of her yellow beetle, when she notices a red metal box in the gutter. Realizing it’s the same box that Henry’s book was hidden in, she opens it. The book is inside, fully intact. August watches Emma from around the corner.)

Sometime after August tells Henry that he knows the book is truthful (gosh, really cant remember which episode)

ETA: found it. It’s Heart of Darkness?
