Once Upon a Time has begun its fifth season on ABC this past week. The show deals with fairy tale characters colliding with the real world. Throughout the season, we’ve discovered the connections between the different characters with flashbacks to the time in their own world.

Recently, Emma Swan (played by Jennifer Morrison), the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming, has been forced to take on a great evil to save the town of Storybrooke. Now, as she fights the influence of the Dark One, it’s up to the rest to locate Merlin to try to save her from becoming the Black Swan.

Merlin will be played by Elliot Knight (How to Get Away with Murder) and we got the chance to talk to him about taking on the iconic role and what’s coming up in this season.

CV: In the first episode, we saw you have a cameo set in Emma’s past. Is it meant to be a surprise to viewers who you were?

ELLIOT: I think it’s something they added in. I don’t think it was always there originally. It’s something I’m really glad that they added.

This explains why Adam and Eddy initially said months ago that Merlin wouldn’t be in the premiere. Seems like he really wasn’t at the time, and this movie theater scene with him and Young Emma was a latter addition.

CV: Can we assume you’re going to have a big role throughout the season?

ELLIOT: It’s tough for me to say. Some things I can and can’t say. We already know he’s going to play such a huge role in terms of Emma’s future and what’s happening. He’s very heavily connected to a lot of the things she’s going to go through. In terms of what specifically, I can’t say. But he will be there. He’s definitely going to be there. When he’s there, be ready for things to go down because they will. They really will.

“For things to go down”….Hmm…is that a hint to a possible Merlin vs Dark Swan? If so…I’m willing to place some cookies on Merlin, the Ultimate Enchanter.
