Peter selling pumpkins- “Peter, Peter, Pumpkin eater. Had a wife but couldn’t keep her;: He put her in a pumpkin shell: And there he kept her very well.”
Maybe because the illustrations in my fairytale books were so sweet… but I always thought that PETER PETER put his wife in a pumpkin shaped house…. it had flowers, window boxes and white picket fence so I never thought of her as being enslaved or kept for drudgery. Men in the old days did not marry till they could provide a proper home…… all a different point of view.
