Once Upon a Time’s version of the Underworld is, in a word, twisted.

After Emma (Jennifer Morrison) discovered that Hook’s (Colin O’Donoghue) sacrifice to save the residents of Storybrooke from certain death was all in vain — never trust the Dark One (Robert Carlyle)! — she led a ragtag group into the Underworld to save him. But where they’re headed is quite familiar. A promo for the second half of the season has revealed that the Underworld is basically Storybrooke, only with a twist.

“Hell, as a geographical location, is not what we expect it to be,” Ginnifer Goodwin tells EW. “What we do find ends up being pretty profound and enables us to relive some of the original Once Upon a Time season 1 themes.”

“It’s almost identical to Storybrooke,” Lana Parrilla says. “It reminds me of when Marty McFly goes back to his old neighborhood, it’s just different and torn down, there’s graffiti everywhere. Storybrooke doesn’t look the same at all.”

When I first saw the set photos for the Underworld last month, I admit I too was reminded of Back to the Future Part II. In Back to the Future Part II, the Biff Tannen from 2015 goes back to 1955 and gives his younger self a sports almanac, which allows himself to make a fortune off of gambling. Since the sports almanac reveals all the winners of any sporting event til the end of the century, Biff simply had to bet on the winner. As a result, Marty McFly ends up returning to an alternate 1985 version of Hill Valley. The town is all run done, crime is everywhere, and worst of all Biff is large and in charge. The filmmakers have referred to this version of Hill Valley as “Hell Valley.” To quote Doc Brown, “No, it’s Hill Valley, although I can’t imagine Hell being much worse!” It’s no secret that Adam and Eddy are huge Back to the Future fans, considering that the Season 3 finale was a whole big homage to the original film. It wouldn’t surprise me if Back to the Future Part II’s Hell Valley was an intentional inspiration here.
