Those guys are so inventive,” Lee told reporters at the Television Critics Association’s press tour on Saturday, referring to OUAT bosses Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis. “You know these great shows with strong franchises, they ebb and flow as you go through.” With that said, Lee is feeling pretty positive about Once Upon a Time continuing on past season 5.

    Golly!

You mean Paul Lee, the head honcho for ABC, who’s sole responsibility is to convince rich advertisers to give his company money so that, in exchange for this money, commercials can be shown to targeted audiences who will buy said rich advertisers’ products thereby allowing ABC to keep their lights on by producing more shows which get more money in this circular fashion, thinks that OUAT has a bright future?

    Astonishing.

    *rolls eyes*

Please. Paul Lee knows as well as I do that as soon as the money leaves, so will OUAT. It’s all about those Benjamins. Yes yes yes. We all know we’re getting a season 6. But beyond that…? Doubtful unless there is a radical alteration in ratings. It’s not about creativity or storytelling. It’s about the money.

Paul Lee was also acting positive about Revenge’s future at last year’s winter press tour, and yet that show got cancelled by the end of the Season. Like the TVGrimReaper (the former Cancellation Bear) says, it’s what you call a PR Jedi mind trick. It’s the network’s job to be as positive as they can about all of their current shows.

LOL. This is nothing more than a PR. If they are so happy with the show, where are Season 6-7-8 orders and renewal announcements? But don’t worry it will work on most fans.

Well ABC doesn’t announce any of their renewals until May, normally the Friday before their upfronts. That’s always the case, no matter how successful a show is.

To be fair, some shows do get early renewal but in order for that to happen, they have to be doing extremely well (and have done extremely well in the past). For example, TBBT was renewed in S7 for three more seasons in one fell swoop (S8, S9, and S10). In 2015 it brought in $348,000 in ad buys for one thirty-second commercial (OUAT brought in $155,000 in 2015) hence its easy early and many-season’d renewal. ABC sometimes will do early renewal under special circumstances. With LOST, they renewed it through season 6 earlier than the airing of S5 but with the caveat that S6 would be the last season overall.

However with OUAT, I think ABC does take it one season at a time. This is, as Matt rightly says, a PR Jedi Mind Trick to fool ad buyers into believing that they should continue to shell out big $$ for a chance to air their products from 8pm-9pm on Sundays. The odd thing is that it works. From 2014 to 2015 there was a 14% increase in ad buy amounts even though, after the Frozen hype died out, our ratings weren’t lowish (somewhere between 2.0 and 1.6 most weeks)
