Will Grumpy and the rest of Once Upon a Time‘s dwarfs finally sing about whistling while they work? Will erstwhile cricket Dr. Archie Hopper let loose with a tune about wishing upon a star?
“Be prepared” (as Scar might croon), because such melodic mysteries might be addressed during Season 6. TVLine hears that the fantastical, fairy tale-themed ABC series is currently planning a musical episode, to air sometime this spring. And
An ABC spokesperson had no comment on TVLine’s story.
Having weaved in characters from Frozen, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and other musical Disney features over the years, talk of Once cuing up a musical episode has always brewed, with series cocreator Eddy Kitsis saying as recently as the 2015 Comic-Con, “It would be great to do a musical episode, [but] I don’t know even know where to begin.”
Well, it would seem that the show bosses figured that one out.
As for who all would step up to the proverbial mic, “We all sing,” Once lead Jennifer Morrison told E! Online back in 2011 when asked about the possibility of a musical outing. “Josh Dallas, Ginny Goodwin, me…. I don’t know if Robert Carlyle sings; he probably does. I feel like we have a lot of musically inclined people in the cast. We’ll see!” Indeed.
Once, of course, won’t be the only musical lark in town this spring: The CW’s Supergirl/The Flash crossover will find the superfriends battling the Music Meister while breaking out in song, in a two-parter airing March 20-21.
Once Upon a Time resumes Season 6 on Sunday, March 5.

[adrotate group="5"]"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"January 22, 2017 at 3:59 pm #332727RumplesGirlKeymasterI have never been in favor of this idea. Here’s why: musical episodes on a non-musical TV show take a certain kind of genius. A Joss Whedon level genius, you might say. Joss took a huge chunk of the 6th season of Buffy off in order to write, compose, rehearse and plan the musical episode. And it was (pardon the pun) pitch perfect.
But it’s not something that can be thrown together over the course of 6-10 days like an ordinary episode; not when your TV show isn’t set up that way. Glee made it work because it was part of the DNA of that show (and I’ll argue that it couldn’t uphold that format for very long…like not past S2). Look at Grey’s Anatomy; that episode didn’t work (for me) and Shonda Rhimes is pretty gosh darn talented.
I don’t think A and E have it in them to write a musical episode (or even just to steal Disney songs and force them into the mouths of the actors) because their show isn’t set up for such a feat. Like….what? Some Big Bad comes to town and curses them all to burst into song? Yeah, they’re already getting hammered with Buffy plagiarism criticisms. Let’s not add fuel to the fire.
Also, it comes across as a desperate attempt to score some ratings points, especially if all they end up doing is taking iconic Disney songs and using them in place of something original.

If they incorporate Giselle from Enchanted, that would explain it. Her presence in the “real world” caused everyone around her, including animals, to sing and dance. So I could buyt that. It goes with Once’s world hopping multiverse thing too.
But I’m sure it will be some magic mumbo jumbo. Belle makes a wish that she wishes she could know Rumpel’s true heart/feelings and now that entire town is singing their wants and desires. A slight rip off of Buffy? Sure. But eh. Or maybe its a talent show and SB wants to take a break from all the danger and get into that.
I don’t think it will be great. But its something new.

I’ve recently theorized that if OUAT ever did do a musical episode, then they would incorporate the Phantom of the Opera. He would possibly fill in a similar role, with the ability to make people sing.
This clearly feels like a ratings stunt. I wonder if news of the Flash/Supergirl musical episode also convinced them to finally do one?

A ratings stunt and a check mark off the old “to do before we close up shop” list. Like, I actually believe that somewhere in the writer’s room there’s a list of “frequently asked about things” from the fandom and they’re just trying to tick off as many as they can: Rumple’s mother and the Black Fairy; the return of Tinkerbell; a musical episode. I know that S7 is almost a sure a thing but if it’s not a full 22 season then they need to check off things a little more quickly.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"January 22, 2017 at 4:51 pm #332732RumplesGirlKeymasterOh one more thing: this article says that the author has only heard rumblings of a musical episode; A and E are silent on the matter and the only quotes in the article on the matter were pulled from a few years ago.
Now Matt M is a pretty credible source so if he says he has heard something then I absolutely believe that he’s heard something but we should take it with a grain of salt until we get something from A and E.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"January 22, 2017 at 5:38 pm #332733RainbowParticipantCome on this is OUAT, most of the times ouat articles in media have half “alternative facts” for pR and Buzz feed given by A&E, so this musical episode, is probably the gang on granny having a party and singing songs from disney movies on karaoke, until something happens and the party ends and then all back to the same action stuff.
And in the case this is actually true, i see this happening with aladdin and jasmine final epi and just the 2 of them, or maybe flashbacks of them and they appear singing.

Another reason for the success of the Buffy musical was that the characters and their problems and relationships still mattered so much to the audience. I get the impression that even hardcore fans of OUAT are watching the show now at best just for the sake of completeness.

I think that’s a pretty fair point. Buffy’s musical numbers resonated so much because they were all about those relationships and problems you pointed out. The music fit everything about the show, not just a spur-of-the-moment-musical. And I also think you’re right about the hardcore fans of OUAT; even if they aren’t watching for just completeness, a lot of them are watching just for one or two characters, never mind the rest.
