Tonight we met Beowulf, a legendary hero, wielder of the sword Hrunting. What did you think of this epic hero? Why did the Blue Fairy forge Hrunting? Is it magical or does it only give the allusion of being a hero? Can Gideon really not kill Emma without it?

I actually enjoyed the Beowulf story of a man who thought he was destined to be a hero and felt cheated (Arthur) I know I read Beowulf in school but don’t really remember the story all that much, just that he defeated the Grindal. I think the sword is probably not very powerful and is not needed to kill Emma.
This sword confuses me. Is it actually a hero’s sword or does it only give the allusion of being a hero’s sword?
Anyone wanna bet Blue forged it as a weapon against Black Fairy??

As a Green Lantern fan, I like this idea. In DC Comics, blue is the colour of hope, and green is the colour of determination. The blue power can’t do much on its own, but blue and green have a symbiotic relationship where they strengthen each other, although if they get too close then there’s a non-zero chance that the green will overcharge and explode.
I don’t think green works like that here — though if it does, it’d be interesting to see Zelena shake the Blue Fairy’s hand — but it seems blue power works the same on the show as in the comics.

In the poem, Beowulf gets the sword from Unferth, a servant. This is from Wikpedia on analysis for Unferth

Unferth’s taunt spurs Beowulf into action and reignites Hrothgar’s and the people’s faith in him. Their exchange also provides dramatic tension between the hero’s arrival and the fight with Grendel

We better get this story. Like why on earth did she make the sword? that’s important to know.
And may I add I thought it was cool that they made the sword connect to Beowulf and Hrunting. I like it when they successful connect orginal themes and objects from the show and meld them into stories we already know, with a twist. It felt like classic Ouat.

One thing that bothered me about that was, who told the Blue Fairy about this? Correct me if I am wrong, but I don’t recall Gideon telling this to anyone but Rumple. Unless, Rumple texted Belle right away after Gideon told him and Belle told Blue…. or if Black is Blue and somehow she orchestrated all of this to happen for some [insert evil Black Fairy purpose here]?
