Another Sunday, another episode! What did you like and not like about this week’s episode “Where Bluebirds Fly”?
[adrotate group="5"]"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"April 23, 2017 at 8:59 pm #337011RumplesGirlKeymasterGENERAL: Well, it’s certainly better than last week’s horror. There are some really funny lines and Jamie Murray is doing great work as the Black Fairy but mostly I felt like this episode was a bit of a waste. The flashbacks are becoming more and more unnecessary and the show would be smart to do away with them altogether. Zelena’s story simply doesn’t resonate with me because she’s never been given much room to develop for longer than an episode–and chances are she reverts back the episode after her development.
RATING: 6.5/10
LIKED
–“Why don’t you practice on my axe!” Well that escalated quickly LOL
–“Your mother has a key. Good to know.” LOL
–“‘You really want to pick out centerpieces on the eve of the final battle?”
–Hades shout out! (I miss him)
–The visual of the Black Fairy standing up, laughing, and walking against Zelena’s magic was very effective.
–Fairly decent Lion CGI.
–“Why is it that even when your sister isn’t the villain we’re fighting…SHE’S THE VILLAIN WE’RE FIGHTING?” LOL!!!!!
MIXED
–I get Snow’s philosophy of living in the moment and trying to provide hope on the eve of the final battle but 1) does anyone in SB outside the CharMillStiltskins even know about the Final Battle and 2) it still means that one of the best fighters, archer, and sorceress are twiddling their thumbs will a Big Bad saunters around town.
–David’s philosophy is also perfectly valid and I like how he and Snow are on opposite sides of the argument. But we also know this is moot because the wedding is in two weeks
DISLIKED
–The pen glows now?
–Emma’s coat is obnoxiously ugly.
–During the sneak peek I was really excited that Snow/Charming/CS invited Henry along for the wedding planning but I’m really bummed out that he was an afterthought, from Charming, when Henry needed a break in Authorhood. Like, come on! He’s Emma’s son. Inviting him should be a given.
–Crimson Heart. Ye gods. The MacGuffins this year are plentiful and annoying.
–Belle the Babysitter, once again.
–These flashbacks are totally pointless and unnecessary.

I’ve enjoyed this episode more than the last few, so that was a step up! However, it felt a little slow at certain parts!
Liked:
Zelena finally remembering just how powerful she really was.
Black Fairy keeps me on my toes….I definetly like it!
Rumple and Belle!
Even though the Mills Sisters need to have a looooong session with Archie, still a little excited for the WickedSisters Adventure.
Zelena telling it like it is….Regina did blame her, even though Z did sacrifice Hades to save her.
Snow White & Charming fighting for control over Emma’s Wedding.
Mixed:
So Zelena left her child with Belle, who lost her own child to the very same woman she’s supposed to be keeping Robyn safe from. I love Belle, but I don’t think I would’ve done that…
The “heroes” only being nice to Zelena when she’s about to sacrifice all of her magic and save everyone…. (Sigh)
The flashback could’ve been definetly better.
Disliked:
Magical McGuffin #593, The Crimson Heart!
As much as they poof around…why did Zelena and Regina think they were trapped underground?! I just don’t understand it….
This may have nothing to do with the episode, but I really wanted to hand everyone in the cast a brush or a comb!

April 23, 2017 at 9:30 pm #337021AKAParticipantI thought this episode was entertaining. It was definitely not the worse episode of the half and it was definitely not the best. I would give it a 7.5/10
Liked:
Snow’s big wedding book that she has been collecting since after the first curse.
The parallel between Charmings and Rumbelle both realizing how much time they have lost with their child and how they don’t want to miss anymore milestones
Zelena acting like a hero and “sacrificing” her specialness (power) for the betterment of everyone else. Although it would have been more satisfying if they linked the flashbacks and had Zelena go to OZ and give the tinman the heart after it sucked up her power.
Zelena realizing that what she really wants is friends and family
The ending scene between Regina, Zelena, and Emma was well done.
Rumple being unselfish for once and allowing Emma, Regina, and more importantly Zelena (you know the woman who killed his first kid) help him with Blue
Rumbelle was very good, Belle actually had more than just a few seconds of screen time although she was relegated yet again to babysitter and was supporting Rumple in every way.
I now officially can’t wait until next week
Disliked:
Man I am glad they backtracked on Regina and Zelena because Regina was being a total jerk with her why don’t you just go back to OZ.
The fact that all the “heroes” were totally on board with kicking Zelena out of Storybrook and then they were like yeah no problem give up what you feel makes you special. I wonder if anyone would ever ask or encourage Regina or Emma to do the same. That’s right in Season 4 they all encouraged Emma NOT to give up her powers because that is what made her special. I know the situation is different but I don’t think Zelena’s sacrifice was acknowledged enough.
April 23, 2017 at 9:41 pm #337028bibliophileParticipantThis episode was better than last week by a mile. It may not be Once at it’s finest, but at least the magic MacGuffin this week didn’t make me cringe like the stuff last week did.
LOVED
Rumple and Belle working together. Seriously why couldn’t they have been this way all along?
The Black Fairy is a very effective and scary villain. Possibly one of their best.
I was happy at the end when everyone seemed to be working together to wake Blue and shake some answers out of her. But why didn’t they mention Gideon’s heart at all? This should be common knowledge guys! Can’t Rumbelle see that their son will be safer if ‘the heroes’ understood that his heart is being controlled?
MIXED
As sweet as it was to see Belle and a baby, it does kind of suck how her character always ends up as the babysitter. Seriously she and Granny should start a daycare and start charging for childcare (where exactly is baby Neal again?) At least this time there was a little bit of character development in that she got a few lines about how much she and Rumple (yes she included Rumple!) missed with their son. Granted Belle herself was a big reason for that and an acknowledgement of that might be nice. Maybe even an apology.
The Regina and Zelena feud needed to be addressed I suppose, but I’m often confused by the meanness we see in Regina in episodes like this one when we’re always being told that she’s a hero now. Yes, Zelena was being hotheaded and shortsighted, but yelling at her and blaming her for all the things isn’t going to help the situation Regina. I didn’t understand how they could be ‘trapped’ underground either.
DISLIKED
I did not need the Emma/Hook make-out scene. Thank heavens Snow walked in and saved the day with some comedy. I do really like how excited Snow is to get to be a part of at least one of Emma’s milestones (though one could argue she’s been a part of many milestones already with all these curses and hell jaunts).
The Zelena backstory didn’t really click for me and as wickedregal said above it’s annoying that the heroes are only nice to Zelena (and I might add Rumple) when she’s doing something for them. I seem to remember them being nice to Regina time and time again while she was still officially a villain. Maybe if they’d coddled Zelena that much she would’ve reformed a long time ago. Honestly this turn around from Zelena is more impressive to me then Regina’s since she came to this decision on her own and without any encouragement from anyone. She just decided that her life sucked and running off to Oz wouldn’t change that so she sacrificed her magic to give them a chance to defeat The Black Fairy. That’s huge. In a way I wish her well and I haven’t forgotten about Baelfire either.
April 24, 2017 at 3:00 am #337062onceaholicParticipant7/10 It was all right.
It was nice to see Zelena do something heroic.
I felt that it was a bit much for Regina to tell Zelena to go back to Oz just because she tried to save everyone from the Black Fairy and made a mess of it.
Did I blink and miss the part when Zelena says the Black Fairy is threatening her baby? It was in the promo but not in the episode????
Keeper of Regina's bravery

.
Zelena said it … but it was one sentence in a larger scene so it was easy to miss.

Bickering bridezilla Charmings are hilarious.
Rumbelle actually working together. And Belle actually had something to say/do, even if it was mostly babysitting it was still used to develop her character.
Henry being included in a way that’s not just looming in the background. Although why does the pen suddenly glow and print rather than write cursive? I suppose it’s gone digital.
Mixed/Disliked
Zelena’s flashbacks to Oz were by and large unnecessary (their only point being to deliver the MacGuffin by convenient green tornado I suppose). But the way Zelena story played out makes me think of a theory (below).
BF’s speech affectations (is it meant to be an accent?) annoys me to absolutely no end. I don’t understand what it’s supposed to do or be. Otherwise, she’s a perfectly menacing villain, but the delivery is distracting.
Regina was a bit harsh sending Zelena back to Oz — as if she had never tried and failed (or made things worse).
That line “we will take care of her, she is one of us” about Robyn. Ah, because if she weren’t one of you, you’d dump an infant by the side of the road and walk away? Yes, writers, we already know that the heroes are as cliquish as your worst American high school stereotype, but that’s just silly. I suppose the alternative is that the poor child would end up with the fairies, and we know how that ends. Also, where’s baby Neil again?
Theory:
I wonder if the symbolic aspect of the final battle is going to take the model they’ve introduced with Zelena, and apply it to each main character: where they have to choose between two core contradictory drives that define that character. For Zelena, it was always the desire to be special/stand out/be better vs the desire to belong, to have a family. Zelena’s relationship with Hades was the only one where the two drives were brought together in a non-antagonistic way. And here she was presented with the choice between magic and family — but I think magic here is not a stand-in for power (as it would be with Rumple) but a stand-in for difference, uniqueness (as in, would one give up the one talent that defines their identity for the sake of family?) So if this is now a model for the final battle, what would it be for each character?
April 24, 2017 at 8:55 am #337072AKAParticipantDid anyone else think that Charming might know or suspect what one of the symbols on the author paper meant. I thought that was a weird moment when Charming looks down at the paper and at the symbols. He had a expression on his face that seems to say hey I recognize that but I am not going to mention it.
April 24, 2017 at 9:52 am #337073RumplesGirlKeymasterAlso, where’s baby Neil again?
I am absolutely convinced that Snowing/The Writers have forgotten that Snowing have a second child.
