One of the most anticipated episodes yet! What were you favorite and least favorite moments of 6×19 “The Black Fairy?”
[adrotate group="5"]"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"April 30, 2017 at 8:59 pm #337492RumplesGirlKeymasterGENERAL: A mostly pretty good episode but not one without issues. So what’s the problem? everything feels cobbled together. It’s like the writers knew they needed to provide answers but because they had to slap-dash it together (after the ratings began to hint at cancellation) it feels rushed and not well thought out and like most episodes lately it confuse the mythology. The performances are really good, especially Jamie Murray and Bobby Carlyle and I like some of the neat circles of Rumple, his mother, Emma and Rumple’s children. But it’s all so haphazard. It’s still one of the better of the season when compared to some truly egregious ones.
RATING: 8.5/10
LIKED
–“That’s the problem with Saviors, isn’t it Ms Swan? Not quite as helpful as advertised.”
–Object continuity with the cuff of S3 and the sands and shears from earlier this year.
–Rumple and his sons will always be one of the more powerful stories on this show.
–Zelena hitting Black with her car was hilarious
–Emma talking to Rumple about the pain of abandonment was well done. It brought to mind some moments from Manhattan when Neal tried to say the same thing.
–The Black Fairy has a crescent moon that she wasn’t born with; it was made. That’s super well done and in line with one of the biggest themes and often quoted lines on the show.
–Fiona choosing to not give up her power for her child and instead severing Rumple’s Savior fate. There are so many Rumple/Bae parallels tonight.
–“It’s a vile, dangerous world son.” “Because of villains like you. And me.” I’ve had my issues with Rumple over the years but he’s self aware at least; he doesn’t deny his villainy.
MIXED
–How is Black the most evil creature in existence when she was born after Merlin/Nimue adventure with the Dark One’s Curse?
–Storybrooke has an Ikea?
–Funny Regina/Zelena learning to drive moments but seriously? Regina couldn’t just give Zelena an automatic instead of a stick shift?
–So what exactly was Fiona’s plan? To kill a baby born with a scar? And Tiger Lily just goes along with it? Like shouldn’t Tiger Lily be more powerful than a woman who became a fairy by waving a wand randomly? And where’s Blue during all this?
DISLIKED
–Every time they say “many years ago” it basically means “we don’t know nor do we care”
–Rumple was supposed to be a Savior? Why. Everyone say it with me: Emma is not the Savior just because she was born of true love! She’s the Savior because of Rumple. And we have no idea why Aladdin is a Savior! They were supposed to flesh out and make clear all the Savior mythology but they just tied themselves into knots and confused us.
–Blue isn’t Rumple’s fairy godmother which would have been a very neat circle given her history with his family.
–Tiger Lily’s fairy dress might be uglier than Blue’s jelly fish one?
–Apparently it’s so easy to become a fairy! Just wave a wand and utter some gibberish!
–Um, Belle? All this time you’ve known that thee was a good man behind the beast and YET you turned into a shrill shrew and said there was no hope for him? But now that a vision of the past says Rumple was supposed to be a Savior suddenly you’re all lovey-dovey again? Eek.
–How is “Rumplestiltskin” a perfect name for this situation? LOL that makes no sense.
–Come on, Rumple! COME ON.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"April 30, 2017 at 9:35 pm #337499bibliophileParticipantI just don’t know how to feel at the moment. I loved the first ten – fifteen minutes right up until they said Rumple was prophesied to die… then my heart dropped into my shoes. Even though I knew it was likely I still held onto hope and right about now that hope is starting to shrink to mustard seed dimensions.
The Black Fairy backstory was different than I expected because she started out human rather than fairy, but that twist was unexpected for a reason IT MAKES NO SENSE. Based on how Black and everyone who knows Black talks about her she sounded like an ancient evil type and it makes zip sense that she’s barely older than Rumple. Add to that her sudden affection for Rumple once he knows her secret feels as bizarre as Emma ridicules behavior in season five when she was hiding the double dark one thing. So one minute BF wants to kill everyone and delights in torturing Rumple and his son and as soon her her big secret is out she’s all mummy loves you again? I don’t get it.
BF was basically a good women corrupted by magic (some kind of dark fairy thing that happens when fairies dabble with dark magic instead of light, paralleling Rumple and The Dark One curse) and the need to protect her son at all costs up until the point it might cost her her newly acquired (really how long had she even been a fairy judging by the size of baby Rumple when the fairies dumped him on Malcolm) power and after only like a month of being fairy powerful she couldn’t stand the idea of being human again even if that would’ve saved her son? I’m just a bit confused here. Granted my satellite TV when out for a minute or so while BF and Rumple were having their big chat so maybe I am missing something somewhere.
–Um, Belle? All this time you’ve known that thee was a good man behind the beast and YET you turned into a shrill shrew and said there was no hope for him? But now that a vision of the past says Rumple was supposed to be a Savior suddenly you’re all lovey-dovey again? Eek.
I agree. Belle is one of the worst written characters on the show as far as consistency goes.
I certainly hope that Rumple has a plan up his sleeve that will save the show and himself from certain doom, but I can’t help remembering a bit of trivia I heard about ‘Yankee Doodle Dandy’ (which is an old old film for the information of the younger ones here) that the actor playing the father didn’t want the role until they offered to write him a great death bed scene and (apparently) all actors love a great death scene. Which of course adds to my disquiet as to the fate of my favorite character.
April 30, 2017 at 9:40 pm #337502AKAParticipantI was SO looking forward to this episode and for the most part it was REALLY good 9/10 although I will say that my TV lost programming in the last couple of minutes so I didn’t get to see the ending or the promo.
Liked:
Bobby Carlyle is an OUTSTANDING actor and everything he did in the episode was spot on. Wow can we even imagine an OUAT without him?
Rumple is best as a dad the scenes between him and Gideon were absolutely heart stopping
The parallels between Rumple/Fiona and Rumple/Bae were good
The black fairy is somewhat sympathetic but not enough to want to let her live. Love that they brought back the evil is not born it is made
Rumple stating at the end that everything he does whether they realize it or not is for Belle and Gideon. We always know where we stand with Rumple he cares about His family and protecting His loved ones no one else matters.
Hook asking Henry to be the best man was needed and I liked it.
Emma and Rumple working together somewhat. I did not absolutely hate Emma this episode which is an improvement.
We finally got to see a Belle and Gideon moment, which was good if short. We also got to see Belle stating that she would fight for their family
Zelena running over the Black Fairy was GREAT, I loved the fact that the feathers from her cape flew up like a chicken in flight.
Mixed:
Loved that Regina was thinking about Henry and not wanting him to be around for the finale battle so that he would not see anything damaging to him, but come on so Henry you will now be raised by the woman who killed your father. How quickly OUAT likes to forget these things
Again what is the purpose of Blue? And why would Blue interfere in Bae’s life why give him a bean to take him to the place without magic knowing who Rumple was? So many unanswered questions with her.
Why in the world would Tiger Lily give Fiona a prophesy that her son was going to be killed. Hey new mom, just so you know your son will have great light magic but he will die to save others. No new mom wants to hear this, Fiona of course was going to try and change his fate she just should have severed her fate instead of his. She chose Power over Love.
Um, Belle? All this time you’ve known that thee was a good man behind the beast and YET you turned into a shrill shrew and said there was no hope for him? But now that a vision of the past says Rumple was supposed to be a Savior suddenly you’re all lovey-dovey again? Eek.
I was one of the hardest on Belle in Season 6A so when I first saw this I was like AMEN, but then I started thinking about it and I think what Belle is saying is that maybe now Rumple can see who she has always seen. Rumple is incredibly hard on himself. He knows he is a villain and does not feel that he is either lovable or deserves to be loved. In Season 6A Belle and Rumple were both panicky messes. The reason Rumple and Belle work well as a couple is because when one of them panics (which happens quite often) the other is there to support, the problem in 6A is that they were both panicking at the same time which does not work.

I am still holding out hope, because 1. his fate was severed so now that prophesy does not stand 2. I still think this would be too big for OUAT to leak out. 3. I can’t imagine that OUAT would crap again on Rumbelle fans because wow have we been put through the ringer.
I actually think that this episode just emphasizes the importance of Rumple choosing family over power. He needs to stop the viscous dark circle that his family is in and he does that by making a sacrifice of power over love.

But I think this is going to be a moment of Rumple choosing his destiny (= choosing to die) for his family which will keep with his promise to protect Belle and Gideon and save Emma from having to do the Savior thing AND end the cycle of choosing power over family.

I think a person becomes a hero due to the circumstances he is in … and more often then not because he decides to take action to something about the situation to help more than just himself but the persons he is around. You see that in everyday with fireman, soldiers and police.

In real life, yes. However, here in the Onceiverse, Emma was the Savior by Birth (True Love) and by machinations (Rumple and the TL potion on the Dark Curse). We do not know anything about Aladdin except some sort of vague “Diamond in the Rough.” Rumple seems to be born of True Love (including lights flickering) but nothing else including circumstance since he was a baby and apparently destined to be a Savior by virtue of prophecy.

NO, I just want to BELIEVE 🙂

Okay….this episode is definetly one of the better episodes of the past second half.
Liked:
Papa Rumple….Bobby’s scenes tonight with Giles were definetly a highlight!!! Kudos to them both, but especially to Bobby, who slayed tonight’s episode!!!!
Black Fairy/Fiona, I gotta admit…I enjoy the heck out of her!!! Jamie Murray & Bobby were spectacular as well, the whole revelation scene was really well done!!
The mass amount of parallels between Rumple and his mother, and somehow…Blue Fairy is at the root of both of them missing out on their children. Blue gave Bae the bean, and Blue banished Fiona!
WickedSisters having each other’s back!!! Zelena ran over the Black Fairy to protect Regina….mess with one sister, mess with all sisters!!!
Mixed:
I’m so confused on the whole Savior Thing…like….who else is a Savior at this point?!!!
Okay Regina….I love WickedSisters, but just yesterday, you were telling Zelena to go back to Oz….now you’re asking her to raise Henry in case everyone dies! I love all the sudden affection, but it’s bittersweet because it seems like you’re only trusting her now because she’s powerless?!!! Like Regina, after what the “Heroes” did to you in Season 2…I really don’t want you to do the same to your sister.
Disliked:
I cannot buy Fiona being the root of all Dark Magic, when Nimueh was literally the first ever Dark One.
Sooooo….you mean to tell me that ANYBODY can become a fairy?!!! Are fairies even born then?!!! Was Blue Fairy always the Blue Fairy?!!!!! And why hasn’t Sneaky Fairy come true yet?!!!
