Warner’s Rapunzel will find herself magically trapped in a tower by an evil sorceress. Feisty and full of pluck, she will do whatever it takes to break this spell and make the sorceress who imprisoned her pay for those crimes.

Interesting! When it was announced Emma Booth was playing “the Witch,” I said I’d remembered reading somewhere we were getting a new Rapunzel, but then couldn’t find it and thought maybe I’d dreamed it. Apparently I DID read that and I’m not completely crazy! Haha. So could our new recent prince casting in Charming’s clothes be Flynn Rider?

So the writers are re-casting the role of Rapunzel, previously played by a black woman, with a white woman? Just when I thought the writers were trying to diversify the cast by introducing Tiana and a Latina Cinderella. *sigh* Even though I know that Rapunzel is a blonde European woman in the traditional German fairytale, I think it’s a step backwards to replace a black Rapunzel, which was actually very innovative, with a white woman. It would have been better if the writers had explored more of the previous black Rapunzel’s story, rather than wait to explore more of Rapunzel 2.0’s story when she is portrayed by a white actress. It just leaves a very bad taste in my mouth.

Tangled is one of my least favorite Disney films (Apart from Snow White) so I’m not really thrilled at all to be seeing what I assume will be a more Disney accurate version of the character either.

But I am excited to see Gothel, and that she will be more explicitly a witch hopefully. She was the only enjoyable part of that movie for me 🙂

Yeah I thought the new Rapunzel’s casting call sounded a bit ominous too. Hereos on Once don’t usually seek revenge. I could see them making Rapunzel the villain and Gothel a misunderstood “good” witch.

There’s a theory floating around on the OUAT wiki that it will be revealed that Lady Tremaine used to be Rapunzel. Seeking revenge on the witch could be her “villain motivation.” it’s also been pointed out that Tremaine’s HH last name “Belfry” could be a hint at her past being trapped in a tower. I don’t know if Disney would let them make Rapunzel a villain, but I think it would be a pretty cool twist.

This leaves a pretty bad taste in my mouth, for reasons that Slurpeez already wrote.
