We learned more about Mother Gothel on this week’s episode “Flower Child.” What were your favorite and least favorite moments?
[adrotate group="5"]"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"April 27, 2018 at 9:00 pm #346912RumplesGirlKeymasterGENERAL: When it comes to the longer plot of this season, the absolute exhaustion is showing. This episode felt like all other villain centric episodes–the villains wants a life that society, family, culture ect tells them they can’t have (Rumple wants to start over where he isn’t a coward; Regina wants a simple life with Daniel; Cora doesn’t want to just be the Miller’s Daughter ect ect ect) and it turns them into a villain.
Gothel has been sidelined so hard this second half that it’s hard to see her as an actual threat when there’s been so much other story we’ve had to plod through. She was more threatening when she was locked up in Drizella’s tower.
Honestly, all I want is for this Gothel/coven story to be done so we can dig deeper into the characters we actually care about.
(Random note though: Seraphina is the name of my Dungeons and Dragons character and hearing that name shocked the heck outta me; glad to see this version of that name wasn’t a mean girl!)
Rating: 6/10
LIKED
–Jacinda and Henry trying to figure out if they’ve ever had sex was…ridiculous. But also rather funny.
MIXED
–Lucy clearly follows in her father’s footsteps by making really bad choices when it comes to interacting with villains.
–The “friends” turned out to be mean and nasty. Predictable and trope-tastic. But, I guess, at least the writers wrote it clearly enough to be predictable.
–Gothel’s entire family dying is sad, yes, but how did the humans know where to go? How did they know nymphs were hiding behind the tree and how to even get into the secret garden? Also, the girls dumped mud on Gothel and then somehow managed to go and kill the entire nymph family, get back to the ball, and not ruin their dresses??
–Is the garden/grove a pocket dimension because outside the magic tree, the world looked normal but once inside, it was an Apocalyptic hellscape?
–It’s hard to feel sympathy for Gothel when she says stuff like this: “I never would have left you alone in that tower if I knew you have magic.” Gothel is a terrible mother!
–Thousands of years later? Thousands????
–I don’t understand. Did Gothel create a Land Without Magic? After she wiped out humankind? My sound went in and out a bit so I’m super confused. Can anyone explain?
DISLIKED
–Gothel being a nymph and wanting to be part of the human world comes out of nowhere. It’s never been hinted at all.
–“I’ve done as you asked. I’ve woken them.” Okay but how? How does a random Desk Sergeant wake up witches in a land that supposedly only has tiny bits of magic?
–SMURFS! SMURFS EVERYWHERE! (with dollar store plastic butterflies in their hair!)
–“Mother of all magic in the world.” What does that even mean?? Is this a thing in the EF 1.0?
–“The world was cruel to me. And I became cruel too.” Lo and behold, shocking no one, Gothel’s backstory is because she wanted a different life than what was meant for her. This is literally the boiled down version of every single villain story in OUAT history. It just feels tired at this point.
–Henry built an entire crazy board–complete with pictures of people–in less than a day. Where’d you get the pictures, Henry??
–Did Lucy really pull out Cinderella’s glass slipper from a paper bag from Granny’s?? Why in all of sanity is it there?
–Giant stink plant that murders people is weird.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"April 27, 2018 at 9:02 pm #346913nonnieParticipantRANDOM THOUGHTS WITH NO PARTICULAR ORDER TO LIKES/ DISLIKES … just saying it as I think it while watching the show.
.
.OUAT needs a new costume / hair departments … those green wigs were way to big for the actresses… looked like bushes.
.
.
Loving NOOK with Tilly …. father in the past and unknowing father in HH
.
.
SHOOT one cruel act is what turned GOTHLE into a wicked witch. WEAK .. The destruction of her home / death of her mother made more sense …but she should have listen to her mother’s words.
.
.
FINALLY …. HENRY is using his head… something he did all the time in SB…. under a curse or not would not have changed his basic personality. Like seeing him returning to closer to SB brains and personality.
.
.
TRUTHS coming from TILLY’S mouth. Guess she inherited her grandmother’s wisdom. ….NOT minding Lucy and Ella finding convenient items.
.
.
I swear ABC is adding too many and too often commercials.
.
.
LOVING that TILLY’s learns about NOOK being her father … (hoping) TILLY takes Gothel’s withered, black heart.
.
.
ANOTHER MAGIC BEAN…. And now Gothel is going to punish our world?
.
.
THREATS THREATS and more THREATS from GOTHEL…..
.SANDI …. saving HENRY …. HENRY not dying …. STILL no MAGIC between ELLA and HENRY ….
.
.PROMO …YOUNG HENRY …. looks like he is at HOGWORTS
.

The plant looks like the ones in LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS …. I think it was an homage.

Yep that is what they said, and I have to say that is the stupidest idea ever!!!!!!!!!! So Gothel created our realm 1000’s of years ago? So she is our creator? And how did humankind happen, oh well slimy creatures will always find humanity????? For this reason alone I give this episode a 2/10
By the way the entire episode was completely boring and I had to force myself to pay attention. This may be one of the worst episodes ever and definitely this season.
Liked:
Henry is finally starting to believe, I actually liked him trying analyze his book and figure out who everyone is.
Nook and Tilly working together. I like the fact that Nook did not need any proof that he was Tilly’s father he just felt it and believed. I also liked that Tilly just knew also.
Music: I actually paid a lot of attention to the music this episode and it was really good, probably goes to show how much I did not like the actual plot
Disliked: Too many to name so I will just hit the highlights
Costumes: I am not a costume person but wow those were bad. The butterflies in the hair? I don’t know what they were trying to go with but it failed
Gothel: so she became a villain because some random girl she knew for one day was mean to her and threw mud on her. I get that the person then killed her family but honestly this made no sense. How did the mean girl even get to that place which was locked behind a tree door? So a group of magical beings could not keep a mean human with no magic from killing them? This whole thing was completely contrived and made little to no sense. She then goes to a party kills the mean girl, and sprays the rest of them with pollen? What????
Lucy why would you go to Regina’s maybe boyfriend for help? What is the connection there?
Henry and Jacinda: I know we should care about them but I don’t and I am actually annoyed every time I see them on screen, and what is really sad is that this goes for Lucy too. Writers just break the curse so we can move on from this train accident of a relationship with no chemistry.
April 27, 2018 at 11:23 pm #346934bellaroseParticipantI enjoyed this episode. It held my attention and kept me entertained for the most part.
I knew Henry and Jacinda weren’t going to break the curse. It will either be Henry/Regina, Henry/Lucy, Hook/Alice. It was a parent and child that broke the original ‘Land without magic’ curse not Snowing (which is pretty much what Henry and Jacinda are) so I think it will be the same for this one.
LIKED
Hook and Tilly go to find Henry to convince him that magic is real only to discover that Henry has several whiteboards filled with pictures trying to figure out who everyone is. I thought that was very Henry.
Hook and Tilly on a stake out with Tilly’s little origami rabbit.
oddly I liked Facilier and Lucy’s scenes. Guess he’s good with kids.
Henry and Jacinda’s scenes were sweet
Gothel’s back story. It was needed at this point its hard to figure out who the main villain is supposed to be. There have been too many red herrings.
MIXED
That Gothel is actually a Nymph. I mean I guess it explains why Alice was born from a flower over night but we should have had a few more hints then that.
DISLIKE
The Nymphs costumes! Really that’s what you decided to go with?
The timeline of Gothal’s backstory
Who destroyed Gothel’s home? did the mean girls distract Gothel while they sent guards to kill her family? how did they know where her home was in the first place? Did Gothel tell them about her home and how to find it after breaking into their house?
(EDITED)
Forgot to mention Henry’s poison being cured. If it was really that easy what was the drama about?
Good always wins < That's just what Rumplestiltskin wants you to think Keeper of Belle's Theme Music, The Queen of Hearts Maze, Cora's Missing Heart,Tiny's Golden Harp
April 28, 2018 at 5:43 am #346941GaultheriaParticipantWithout the cutesy-little-girl talk, Alice wasn’t as annoyingly weird this episode.
When the person playing the villain doesn’t successfully convery menace, a sustained blast of dramatic music can’t make up for that.
Where’s your backup, Rogers?
The cataclysm story works better as a war between supernatural forces, with the fancy-dress people as minions of the vengeful volcano god who lives next door to Seattle.

April 28, 2018 at 12:38 pm #346949StahlopParticipantSo I actually liked this episode. This rates up as one of the best of the season for me.
Liked:
Henry believes! Loved the interaction between Tilly, Rogers, and him with the fairy tale land board, and that Tilly was totally on board.
Gothel’s backstory was interesting. I really didn’t know what to expect. Having plant based magic, I’m not surprised she’s some sort of wood nymph. It was surprising that she’s from our land originally and not any version of the Enchanted Forest. I am trying to figure out when in time that was though. Did she wipe out humanity and we came back? Was that the implication? Because it looked liked the 1700’s to me with the clothes they were wearing (Restoration to be precise).
Henry is cured and he and Jacinda kissed and it didn’t break the curse. Please let it be Tilly and Margot that break it!
Mixed:
Love Rogers and Tilly’s father/daughter like relationship, but bringing her on a stakeout? Why do they make Rogers so dumb sometimes? But I loved that Tilly had made a little Wonderland scene in the car with the mushrooms.
Also, Rogers seemed to believe a little too easily that he’s Tilly’s father, considering their ages. Or maybe he was just trying to appease Gothel and Tilly.
Lucy and Samdi. I’m perplexed as to why she went to him but at least he got rid of the curse on Henry. Now can he get rid of the poisoned heart curse between Nook and Alice in their world?
Disliked:
No Regina or Rumple this week. WTH!
The girls who were mean to Gothel were such cliche mean girls. I was hoping they were going to be her original coven.
How convenient that Jacinda has a box with the glass slipper in it? Why would Drizella allow that in the original curse? And since when does Granny’s sell t-shirts?
All in all, a good episode for the end of the season. Pieces are finally falling into place and I can’t wait to see how it ends.

Basically yes. Thousands of years ago, Gothel wiped out all of humanity and killed magic in this realm, making it the Land Without Magic. Humans came back but magic only trickles in a little bit.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"April 28, 2018 at 7:26 pm #346959bibliophileParticipantCan anyone tell me if Facilier is a good guy or a bad guy? Maybe the writers should read each others scripts and not just their own because I’m utterly confused as to what kind of man Facilier is. I mean it’s great that Henry is cured and people can stop harping on that, but why did it feel so easy and why did Facilier help at all?
Add me to the pile that is confused by Gothel suddenly being able to control random policemen with her voice and then that policeman is suddenly able to find and ‘wake’ all the missing witches …what the heck?
As I’ve already stated in ‘Her Image’ thread I thought Gothel’s backstory was stupid and uninteresting and I think it would’ve been better if she could’ve just been a villain because she’s evil or just because she’s not human and so she doesn’t see us as worth her pity or something.
Also any episode without Rumple immediately loses points with me. I am not watching this show for Jacinda thank you very much.
Alice really is an excellent actress and that cannot be said enough.
