Ditto, RG. We still laugh. We still live our lives. But there is a natural physical response to stress that just has to take its course. Being severely disappointed in something you’ve loved and that has brought so much happiness to your life is normal. It is part of life. It is Tuesday afternoon and it just happened Monday. Many of us have been with this show for 2 and a half years. Neal’s death would have been hard, for sure, no matter what. But the way it happened adds a completely different element to the mourning process.
I was on a cruise and watched 221-Second Star to the Right on the first night of our cruise. I cried. I was amazed. I was deeply touched. I was pretty much sure that he was still alive, but I cried over his death. But guess what? I had an AMAZING time on our cruise. That was the very first day of our cruise, actually. And I was fine for the rest of it.
Yes we are in mourning, but the majority of the anger and stress is coming from the complete about-face the story did. I mean heck, supposedly Neal was just now understanding what it took for his father to come find him… WHEN WE JUST HEARD HIM SAY THAT ON THEIR WAY BACK FROM NL. It doesn’t make sense from a logical standpoint. It’s redundant. Him finding a way to NL was where the understanding came from. That was enough to make amends with his father and understand what he went through. And now we get another story and Neal wants to die again because he finally realizes what it took for his father to find him?? It’s a crazy cycle. It’s repeating what has already happened in the story. It’s retconning. It’d be like Hook saying “Oh BT DUBS, I just decided 5 minutes ago to give up my revenge for Milah and help you all.” UM that already happened and he’s already been helping them. See???? ugh
So what we see here I think in all of us isn’t this deep depression because a death has bothered us and shaken us to the core. It’s injustice. It’s frustration. And yes it is mourning too. But it’s mourning Neal AND the show… Something very different than just being upset over the death of a character. It’s the death of a show.
