What truly is heartbreaking for me is that Rumpel was there to see Neal die, even worse he closed his eyes. Somehow this was worse for me than when he was just informed of his death. Yeah, he got to say goodbye, but to see your own child die in front of you…… Suddenly I had a flashback of little Bae and Rumpel…. Awful, just awful….
Yes, it was utterly tragic. No parent ever expects to have his son die before him. Rumple sacrificed himself to make sure Neal would have another chance at happiness, just not with him. Neal’s death is therefore especially crushing for Rumple, who has to live with the knowledge that he failed in saving his son, whom he “died” protecting.
