Either he was being mean or there’s shenanigans going on.. I guess we just have to wait and watch the rest of the season to find out.

Oh, I agree. I don’t like the route they took at all. But I did find that line from the Bros. Grim story interesting. And if this storyline ends with a Rumple free & clear of the Dark One curse, I will at least derive some small sense of satisfaction from that. Small, tiny even, but there.

Rumple already acknowledged in season 2 that magic is a problem and he keeps losing people he loves because of it. And now he has lost his son probably permanently. At the moment he is also learning that even the Dark One can be “powerless” and humiliated. So I agree with you. I don’t think he wants to be the DO any longer.
I still can’t accept that Neal had to die for that to happen. And I think Rumple isn’t going to accept that very easily, either..
I thought the idea was you can only have one true love at a time? So, Daniel was Regina’s TL. He’s gone, so RH (who already had his own TL, with Marian,) is her second chance at TL.
Oh I could’ve sworn that Rumpelstiltskin said it to someone once. That you can have only one true love. I could be remembering his words wrong, but I don’t think he specified that it should be one at a time. Overall I’m always very fuzzy about the “rules” of love/true love in the OUAT universe.
I remeber Charming saying that true love can’t be replaced..
Well, given the way they like to play semantics & leave rules open it perhaps has not been enumerated. I mean, in the exactly one happy Rumple & Milah scene we saw, they seemed to genuinely love each other. Obviously hers was not TL for Rumple. But he carried a torch for her for a long time. Was it TL, or was Belle his first? Can TL go one way? I mean we know Neal considers Emma his TL and she is apparently ambiguous (which is a load of hooey, but whatever,) so maybe it can. Who knows. They haven’t really explained some of the finer points.
I think Rumple is just the kind of man who loves intensely, wether it’s true love or not. And he is generally quite a sentimental guy; he keeps mementos (the chipped cup, Bae’s shawl, his FTL walking stick, etc.) and cries A LOT.
