Meaning the viewers had a general sense of who Baelfire was but there was always a level of distance between where Baelfire’s story cut off arriving in Neverland to the abrupt continuation once he meets Emma as Neal Cassidy. There’s a difference between deliberately being vague on the backstory of your characters with the intention to payoff the information during a crucial moment and just being….lazy.
THIS. They never gave him his story. They just killed him without going, “and here’s how Bae became Neal”
Neal had the lowest amount of airtime second to Belle before reintroducing him to your audience before killing him off in the same episode. The death while beautifully acted did not resonate nor had the lasting emotional zing that under a better written show would have delivered.
Which is why everyone outside of here is like “yeah…over it!”
