In the stories of robin hood that I’ve read/heard Richard was the rightful king. He and Robin went to fight in the crusades. In Richard’s place his younger brother Prince John ruled in his stead. Robin came home and his home of Loxley was taken from him. To get food he killed a boar on the king’s land which made him an outlaw, which is why he stayed in Sherwood Forrest.
Now whether Prince John and Jonathan are the same person, remains to be known.
