I do think that A&E really wanted to keep on with their long planned SF fairy tale. But the way they’ve handled the change in direction, the way they wrote everyone so suddenly OOC, the dismissive way they’ve spoken in interviews, doesn’t endear me to them, so the moments when I feel bed for them are very rare.
I can understand the network may have been pulling their arms for various reasons, but they certainly haven’t ingratiated themselves to me either. They could have at least bothered to write the episode in which Neal died themselves, instead of fobbing it on an untalented writer who butchered August’s “reboot.” And they could have spent more time with Neal and answered many unanswered questions. Instead, they did a hatch job, and then hinted like the trolls they are that he might come back in the finale via time travel but then callously slammed the door shut for really bad reasons.
