I can see why A&E loved Frozen. The problem though is what they set out to write was much worse. Regina, Jones, and Rumple all were actually selfish people who at times have reveled in that. Regina laughing as Marian pleas for mercy? That’s a horrible image, and Elsa never seemed amused by the pain she caused people, unlike I would say, Regina, Jones and Rumple at times. They found it funny or amusing when they hurt people sometimes. I think the writers did intend to originally write them as sociopaths, but the problem is, they’re the more appealing and interesting characters to the writers and a lot of the audience, and whatever their original intentions (shown by hiring Sbarge and Ory, planning arcs for them, for Bailey and the last straw for me as an enchanted rather than disenchanted fan, for MRJ.. )–this is where we are.
It’s interesting to note that Elsa was originally intended to be written as a villain but the writers opted to make her a victim of her own power instead. An animated version of The Snow Queen was considered by Walt Disney himself, and she was going to be a full-on villain who froze a peasant girl’s heart on purpose. This would’ve put her in the same league as Cora. The way Elsa was eventually portrayed in Frozen was not as a sociopath, since as you said, she never intended to harm anyone. In fact, she isolated herself for the sake of protecting her sister, Anna, without realizing she’d unintentionally unleashed an unending winter in her kingdom. A&E may have loved the animated film’s twist of family love being true love, since it fits so well with OUAT in which parental love is shown to be true love. Yet, I’d agree with KFC that the similarity stops short since Elsa was shown to be extremely sorry to have unwittingly unleashed a snow storm on the town whereas other characters on the show have yet to apologize or even appear to be sorry for cursing their entire town/kingdom. (Yes, I point the finger as much as Snow/Charming for recasting the dark curse in S3 as I do Regina and Rumple for casting it in S1). Snow/Charming are just as unapologetic as Rumple/Regina are for uprooting characters like Grumpy, who wanted to remain in the EF, since in the end, they all got wanted they wanted. (Regina got Henry, Snow/Charming got to be reunited with Emma, and Rumple got to be reunited with Neal, albeit not for long). Who cares about everyone else’s suffering? (e.g. Jefferson and Grace, the dwarves, Geppetto and Pinocchio, and even poor old Belle who was locked away)
