I got that impression. I think Jeff actually met his beloved on one of his travels to another land and brought her to the EF, but clearly something happened that made him lose her.

Tea is expensive in the EF perhaps? We know the Hatter likes his tea hmmm. Grace is a few years old. Maybe when she was born he stopped working for Rump, and sparingly spent all the gold in the 9 or 10 years of raising Grace alone and having to support themselves.

It’s expensive to raise a kid so if he quit working altogether to raise Grace that could be the reason why he’s broke. Sad.
