Who cares, that’ll never get explained any more than ever-growing lists of things that never get explanation because its magic and its needed for the plot.

Of course, there’s that meta-sense of the story at work, like that joke about Emma hating a dwarf. I get this sick sense the writers got frustrated with fans guessing their clever twists and started making sure there’s absolutely NO preparation in the story, no smoking guns, no set-up, so that we can’t. We have no idea what they’re doing because THEY will have no idea what they (the writers) are doing! It’ll all just be a surprise! Even for them, because even if they wrote it, they don’t know what anything means until fans react and they decide what they need it to mean to keep ratings up.
