LOL Rainbow
Prepare yourselves. CS fans will say his heart got darker because of all the crap Rumpel made him do. Saint Killy cannot be tainted, dearies. Havent we all learned that by now?
Regina made Graham do a load of bad stuff yet his heart was still bright red with no dark spots. Rumple made him do it is not a valid excuse really.
I still think Hook had more free will than he let on. Until last episode where Rumple was actively puppetting Hook, and Hook came across as a stilted version of himself (it was a clever scene, Colin had to act as Hook being controlled by Rumple trying to play Hook), Rumple wasn’t actively controlling Hook. Yes he had his heart, but he wasn’t puppetting him. Thing is, as we saw with Graham in the season 1 flashback where he helps Charming to escape, a person can still make their own choices when they are not being actively controlled, the threat of having their heart crushed is what keeps them in line.
Rumple outright told Hook he was going to kill him anyway when the time is right. Knowing this, where is the incentive for Hook to toe the line. He’s going to die anyway yet Rumple couldn’t crush his heart until a specific point. We never saw Rumple actively controlling Hook through the heart until last episode (even then Hook tried to alert Emma to something being wrong), Rumple basically just says “Remember I’ve got your heart”. Why did Hook not make things as difficult for Rumple as possible knowing he was going to die anyway and that Rumple couldn’t kill him until a specific time.
Hook hatted the fairies of his own free will. He may not have wanted to do it, but he wasn’t forced into it through heart control. My guess is Hook rationalised it as by filling the hat up with the fairies, it meant Rumple was less likely to try and hat Emma.
I’ve been a bit unimpressed with CS this season. RumBelle are my OTP on the show and that isn’t going to change but I was kind of rooting for CS in 3B, now I’m not. I remember saying I got an SF vibe from the premiere but I liked the CS hug after Emma nearly died but then I started to dislike Hook around the time of the Apprentice when he tried to blackmail Rumple but then ended up getting his fingers burned (ha!) when Rumple blackmailed him back. I’ve worked out why my feelings on CS are so over the place. I actually prefer CS as a friendship pairing rather than a romantic pairing. I never really understood why there was so much hate for CS before, but thanks to OQ now I do. Realistically, CS would not work as anything more than a short term fling because there are major issues there.
Hook is too obsessive, too secretive and too “don’t you worry your pretty little head about it” for Emma, an independent mother with trust issues, to stick with him romantically long term. They’ve had to change Emma’s character to make it work. That is what the missing year was: a plot device to a) allow Henry to catch up with Jared Gilmore age wise, and b) to make Emma more receptive to Hook’s advances. Season 1 and 2 Emma wouldn’t stand for his crap. 3A Emma said she chose Henry over both Hook and Neal. 3B Emma was in an emotionally vulnerable place after finding out that not only were all the happy memories she had of raising Henry a lie but that Walsh, the guy she let into her and Henry’s lives and trusted was a flying monkey. Then whilst she’s still dealing with that, Neal died in her arms. Emma would not have been in the right emotional state to go diving into another romantic relationship. She relied on Hook in Neverland, he was a valuable ally, and when she was dealing with the crap in 3B, she needed a friend to trust. Hook kind of took advantage of her, constantly pushing her for romance.
Hook is obsessive about the people he cares for in his life. He turned pirate because of his brother’s death, he sought revenge on Rumple for centuries because of Milah’s death, now he’s focussed his obsession on Emma. Like I said above, Rumple wasn’t actively controlling Hook when he hatted the fairies, but if Hook felt the choice was between hatting the fairies or Emma going in the hat, well goodbye fairies was the better option. Pan wasn’t that far off the mark when he offered Hook the deal to leave Neverland with Emma. Pan misjudged the bond between Emma and Henry which meant Emma wouldn’t leave without him. However, had it just been a random kid that Pan was after and the Nevengers were trying to rescue, I have no doubt that Hook would’ve taken Pan up on his offer.
Hook only cares about himself and Emma. When Henry said he never liked Hook, Hook only cared about the fact that Emma said they were “together”. Baring in mind that Hook had been sent to fetch Henry so Rumple could take him and Belle out of Storybrooke forever, Hook probably thought Christmas had come at once. He gets Emma all to himself.
Hook is keeping so many secrets from Emma, about his past, about the missing year, what Rumple had him do, etc. Why is Emma not asking him about it? If she is letting Hook near her child, she needs to know what sort of man he is and, with Storybrooke’s record, if there is anyone from his past likely to come back and cause trouble.
Hook’s whole “I’m a survivor” spiel is troubling. Not only did he dismiss Emma’s valid concern that all the men she has cared about died, he basically said to her “Don’t worry your pretty little head about it because I’m a survivor”. He nearly had his heart crushed, and it was literally only thanks to Belle that he didn’t, yet his words to Emma are “I told you so. I’m a survivor”. Also being a “survivor” is not necessarily a positive thing in the sense of how far would Hook go to survive because he’s “a survivor”. Hook mentioned he did Pan’s “dirty work”. What work does Pan consider “dirty work”? If Hook had the choice between saving himself or letting Cinderella’s mother and baby class perish, what would he choose? Would he let them die because he’s “a survivor”?
Emma’s date dress is evidence of how much her character has changed to accommodate CS. Season 1,2 and 3A Emma would never wear something in that colour. When she was wearing Hook’s jacket she was more Emma than without it. Emma’s worn dresses before that exuded how strong and independent she was. That date dress was too virginal in style. It didn’t suit her.
Sorry for the rant.
