However, if Agnes was the best person for the job and they’ve made her look enough like the younger actress in order to pass as the same person then I’ve got no complaints.
Asking an actress to dye her hair dark to better resemble a WoC is pretty gross to begin with.
Also, it’s very convenient how often the “best person for the job” is a white woman. We need to stop pulling this argument because it makes the assumption that there isn’t a WoC who’s just as good(if not better) which ignores the reality of racism and exclusion.
Is it not also racism and exclusion to say to a white woman “you can’t have this job because you’re white”?
I don’t know whether the role of older Lily went to audition or not or whether the casting people specifically chose Agnes for the role without auditions, but the point is the casting people can only choose from the select group they had, they can’t magic up a latina actress if none auditioned for the part. Young Lily went to audition and didn’t specify a race for the character and clearly the young Lily actress was the best person they saw. They didn’t pick her because she’s latina, thy picked her because she was the best person for the job. Roles shouldn’t automatically be given based on race or skin colour because that is just box ticking. Sometimes the casting calls specify race for certain characters eg Mulan’s casting call, but most often they’re open to everyone regardless of race and skin colour. It is then up to the casting team to choose the best person for the job. The best person for the job should not be based on what race or skin colour they are but on their acting skills.
