A couple of things:
Lily said her misfortunes began once she met Emma. That all the things she did that were right ended up terribly wrong.
Lily also mentioned being around Emma seemed to negate the negativity in Lily’s life.
The Apprentice said the deck was stacked against Lily and that makes everything harder.
This makes me think Emma might be able to “fix the deck”. Free will still applies for both Emma and Lily, the only thing the Apprentice did was make the circumstances of Lily’s life that much more difficult to overcome. (I could draw some parallels to real life, but I don’t want to derail the conversation.)
