Isn’t there something that can be said about reaching for what matters most even if it’s not logical?
Sure: Some people would, some people wouldn’t. We don’t all have the same orientation, to use a loaded word. Plus, Rumpel has had 300 or so years of experience with magic, so he’s like an old martial arts master with conditioned responses that overrule instinct and conscious thought.
