Why was she legitimately afraid of him in the first place, this was right after the wake up of the sleeping curse, in which he stated that he would try and be the best person he could be for her. So she is going off the sayings of a Morpheus grown up child which we have already discussed how wrong that was. Right before the sleeping curse she stated “I do know who you truly are, that’s why I love you” and then in this scene we have Rumple honestly telling her that he is here to protect her and the baby from Hyde and her saying “the only person we need protecting from is you” that is both untrue at this time and verbally abusive. What exactly has he done to her that needs protecting from?
I think you are forgetting why Belle even put herself under the sleeping curse to begin with. We could honestly go back and forth until they first met to see causes and effects and reactions between these two. I just happen to see it as her giving Rumple many many many many many opportunities to be the man he claims he wants to be but he always reverts back to the darkness. Always. Even if you say Belle is the abusive one, you cannot argue that if Rumple just was the man he knows Belle wants and says he wants to be and will be, none of this turmoil would be happening.
For example, Rumple slept with Belle and Belle only agreed to that when she thought he was done with darkness for for good. She thought he was going to be the hero she wanted. But then he went and took the darkness back from Emma and took all the power of the DO’s, and then lied to Belle about it. How about in season 4 when he said the thing he cared about the most was her, but then the gauntlet he had from camelot that shows what you care about the most led her straight to the dagger (or maybe the hat, it’s a little fuzzy but it led her to Rumple’s power). Or what about when he had a fake dagger and led Belle to believe it was the real one? Now tell me, when has Belle ever LIED to Rumple like that when it comes to their relationship? If Rumple just gave up the darkness and his lust for power, none of this stuff would have happened and they would be quite happy together. So then how can you put the blame and the majority of the abuse on Belle?
