I was really disappointed with this episode. It had its moments that I liked, but was altogether too mediocre for my liking. There were bizarre moments, like introducing Missy as “the other last of the Time Lords” when neither one of them are anything of the sort anymore…. I confess to being annoyed with the similarities to both Last of the Time Lords and Turn Left. I DID like the Magpie Electronics callback…
I LIKED the idea of the Doctor being cynical and joining the Monks because of all the years spent saving the world and then they just hand it over. I wish they had actually gone with that instead of him playing a big practical joke on Bill. I did not like that they had Bill shoot The Doctor FOUR TIMES, nor did I appreciate the obvious audience fake-out of an early regeneration.
I liked Bill’s “interaction” with her mom. I LOVED The Doctor telling her that in a world of 7 billion, there is one like her. I also loved the entirety of Missy’s place in the story. I don’t really even like Missy, but I adore the way they used her in this arc. Loved her talking about her version of good and The Doctor’s version of good; loved her talking about thinking about all the people she killed. I know they won’t keep the kinder, gentler version of Missy/The Master forever, but I like seeing the different facets of their relationship.
