My thoughts that Belle’s father was more the MAYOR of the village. He could have been Knighted in his youth by having served in the military. He could have been put in charge of the village because he achieved rank. I think this was a common practice. Young men usually of some sort of noble birth / second sons could achieve honors due to service rendered to the king/ prince / overlord. That would be away a king/ prince would maintain loyalty by honoring someone who gave service. …. keep it all in the family/ loyal friends.
