A couple of things that bother me about this episode:

*Even if he is sick and highly distracted, shouldn’t the sheriff do a wee bit more investigating when he comes upon the most feared man in town, alone in the forest in a leather apron and carrying a shovel? Especially when that shovel-carrying man gives such a lame explanation as “a bit of gardening”?

I recently rewatched this episode and was struck by the same thing. I thought it was a measure of just how distracted Graham was, that he didn’t even ask a follow-up question to the entirely implausible explanation. I also thought it was testament to Gold’s ability to half-hypnotize people into not questioning what he is doing. Graham never seemed terribly intimidated by Gold (he had no call to be, I guess). But you’re absolutely right — Gold in the woods with a shovel is nearly as sinister as Gold at the hardware store on Valentine’s day buying rope and duct tape!

I really, really hope this revisited in another episode. I’m starting to think now that maybe Gold was digging up the Zoso dagger, but I don’t know, maybe he was looking for something else.

To be fair to Graham, what Gold was doing in the woods, wasn’t a top priority. He was trying to figure out what those weird dreams were about. 🙁 It’s just so sad once he figured it all out, it meant that he was going to die.
