I still think August is a grown up Pinocchio…he’s the only one with a plausible explanation for how he could have escaped the curse with knowledge of Emma and ended up in our world. Every other possibility would have to be a real stretch to make work. I doubt this is a case of them misleading us.
But I’ll tip my figurative hat to you if I’m wrong.
