I really like Nick’s theory (the one that appears in the podcast blog for “Red-Handed”) that August is Pinnochio for a number of reasons. First, the idea that Pinnochio’s wanderlust led him outside the kingdom before the curse went into effect explains why we haven’t seen him in Storybrooke, why he was able to grow up, and why he would have been able to write Henry’s book. After all, he lived in Fairytale Land and knew everything that had happened up to the point when he was helping Geppetto build the magic tree/portal. Second, when Regina saw August for the first time in Storybrooke, she didn’t know who he was but did notice that there was something familiar about him. Since she presumably knew Pinnochio when he was a boy, the grown-up version probably resembles him in some way. As Nick pointed out, too, he looks to be the age Pinnochio would be 28 years after the curse. He might even be the seven-year-old boy that found Emma, particularly since he knew that Snow White and/or her baby would be transported somewhere when placed in the tree. He probably also knew that the baby was going to be the savior, so it was vitally important that she be found and made safe. It makes sense that he came to Storybrooke when he did, because he knew that something was supposed to happen 28 years after the curse was enacted. There would have been no point in him coming earlier, because everyone was still living in the fog Regina put them in, and Emma was the only one who could break the curse. Maybe he came to start adding to the book now that he knows that Emma is there to change things and that the battle is about to begin…?
