Ha! So there is an actual original translation from Aschenputtel/Aschenbrödel (the German name, first one by the Grimm Brothers, the second another version). I always wondered about it. ^^
The beauty of this fairy tale is, that – like so many others – there are dozens of different versions (old ones) around. There’s Aschenputtel (Grimm version), Aschenbrödel (a ballett by Johann Strauss II and the story by Ludwig Bechstein), La Cenerentola (an opera by Gioachino Rossini), Cendrillon (story by Perrault – this is the one the Disney movie is based on) and many more!
I do love how they named her Ashley in SB, it gives such a great meaning, ashes being dark and filthy, cinders bright. 🙂
