I like the Frankenstein theory and don’t mind some good sci-fi every now and then. Maybe there is another world that combines science and magic (like alchemy) to discover the Philosopher’s Stone, which can grant immortality. That’d be an interesting thing to see them do with Dr. Frakenstein, and would be a deviation from the original book. Yet, I’d also be happy to find out if Dr. Whale is someone else completely and am happy to be surprised.

I agree that the “doctor” might not have any significance to his fairy-tale identity, except that it could correspond to some kind of title of distinction. Whale could refer to the size of his ego, and not his necessarily his name or identity. In the podcast, they commented that David could be a reference the biblical King David, who started out as a shepherd boy, just like Prince Charming did in FTL.
