googling Greg Mendel again. Star Wars theme song has me stumped. I found that “Britain’s greatest sci-fi author” has a trilogy with a character, “Greg Mandel”, a psychic detective. I don’t know if there are any connections, but the character works in DNA, and the covers for the books look very space-agey.
