Sure. Some purists may quibble, but it’s an alternative name for a soundman. More specifically, if you have the nerve to call yourself a sound engineer you have a good deal more knowledge than the dude who just pushed the button to turn on a channel. You understand things like gain structure, reverb times, speaker modes, phase interactions, and so forth. They’re more likely to understand the physics and (sometimes complex) math of sound recording/reinforcement.

While a lot of schools and churches may pop any interested high school geek or guitar player in front of the mixer, a proper sound engineer is who you want when you are dropping your money in a recording studio for that hot demo CD you want to cut. 🙂

Hmmm… I think you may have just given me a topic for one of my blog posts. Right after I finish the one on gain structure that I’m writing now…
