Magic works differently, Rumple isn’t really the “dark one” anymore per se because he’s human rather than how he was in fairytale land.
Perhaps the dagger just holds dark magic rather than being able to control Rumple. Though Rumple should make sure that he still keeps it in a special place.

The only thing that makes Rumpel the dark one is his name on the dagger, like, as far as we can see.
He still looks human and everything. I’m still wondering though as to how he wouldn’t die if he got stabbed by some other knife. Maybe he can get killed by other things in our world? Like, if someone cut his head off, how would he sidestep that?
On a different note, what if somehow hook knows Rumpel is in a world without magic? Maybe Cora told him. What if he planned on the dagger not working?

This could be terrible…but what if…
What if now that there is magic in storybrooke, say the dagger does work. Say hook comes back and gets a hold of it, and finds belle out or whatever. What if he orders Rumpel to kill her? Rip out her heart?
