She probably specified a secluded space without wars, that’s why they ended up in Maine.
As for Geography, I’m sure that both Regina and Gold know where they are.
Part of the curse was information about this world, or at least USA, like an average American.
they have maps, technology, televisions and internet.
they have connection to the world.
