It has bugged me from the beginning that they are including Mulan in this series because her story (in the Disney movie) was based on events that happened in true life (the huns really existed and while the movie obviously took some liberties, the story of Mulan has existed in the Chinese culture as well). Additionally, while I love Jamie Chung and think she is doing an amazing job, she is not Chinese and I really hate when casting directors or whoever chooses who is going to play who lumps all Asians together.
IF the “Chinese” part of the story doesn’t come into play in this series, then whatever – a great actor is a great actor… however, Eddy and Adam talked about the Chinese aspect a bit in the official podcast, and the term Yaoguai means “demon” in Chinese, and Mulan talked about serving in the Emperors’ Army which resonates of the original story.
ANYWAYS… don’t mean to or intend to offend anyone (I just hate ethnic discontinuity in shows), but IF CHINA is important to the story, they should not have cast a non-Chinese actress and just hoped everyone would be like “oh, she must be Chinese cuz she is Asian” and IF China is NOT important to the story, stop putting Chinese stuff into it.
