It was Rumple’s fault that he didn’t go through the vortex with Bae but it was a moment’s cowardice, one that he regretted almost instantaneously. Rumple’s main concern about the vortex was that it would tear him and Bae apart so it’s understandable why he didn’t jump head first into it.
It’s Blue Fairy’s reaction to it that annoys me. Rumple was never cruel to Bae, if anything he was too overprotective. The Blue Fairy didn’t do anything to stop the ogre war in which children were being conscripted, Rumple did. Blue Fairy didn’t help Rumple out when he was trying to prevent Bae from being conscripted in the first place, Rumple had to do it himself which led to him becoming the dark one. For Blue Fairy to then tell Rumple that he drove Bae away after all he’d been through just seems a little off to me.
This is a good point. I wonder what governs her decisions about when to interfere and when not to?
Also, did BF really expect Rumple to be all, “Oh yes son, no worries, I’ll totes jump into the whirling vortex made by the magic bean that you got from my nemesis. Sounds like a fabulous idea. Let’s merrily jump in together on the count of 3.” I mean, c’mon, BF had to know that he wouldn’t exactly be keen to go along with that plan.
Unless she was like Belle and knew that there was still some good in him, buried deep down, and she chose to believe that that side of him would win out. But I’m sure she was knowledgeable about the Dark One curse and knew how strong the power was and how it would be virtually impossible for him to just turn his back on it and trust in her powers instead.
Then there’s that great philosophical argument of whether good can exist without evil. If there is no evil, then how do we know that good is good? So if BF is the good power in the world, could she possibly need the Dark One to remain, in order for her to keep doing her thing? I wonder how the Dark One originally came to be? If BF was the “original power”, then wouldn’t it stand to reason that at one time, all the good AND evil power was contained within her? How did it split apart? Did she try to rid herself, and the world, of dark powers, and in doing so created this new Dark One being, because the power of evil had to still exist in some form, in order for there to be a balance? So maybe she needed Rumple around whether she liked it or not, so she never intended for him to follow Bae, she just wanted to save the kid from his father by separating them? If it was her doing that created the Dark One in the first place, perhaps she felt responsible for Bae’s safety and future, so that’s why she stepped in and orchestrated the whole situation that resulted in him being sent away from that world?
When the show started, I figured BF was gonna be a pretty one dimensional character. Now, not so much.
