Amen, obisgirl. The film had so much potential, but stole from so many other existing films, books, etc (Princess Mononoke, hello???). A pity. Charlize Theron was good, however.
Another film is Finding Neverland (2004) with Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet. It’s about James M. Barrie and how he came to write the book. edited to add: I probably should have named the book, lol. Peter Pan, of course. 😉 Quite dramatic, but I enjoyed it back then. Then again, it’s been 8 years. 😉
Pan’s Labyrinth is also a great pick and although it hasn’t anything to do with fairy tales, the fantastical element is greatly embedded. The story is truly great, though it helps to know a bit about the time while Spain was ruled by the dictator Franco (just a little bit, no need to go too deep, unless you’re interested). Also, only watch if you’re not easily afraid! It sometimes is categorized as fantasy, but really it’s horror … I don’t like horror, but did enjoy this film, because it had a deep and meaningful story, but there are some scenes that truly are disgusting/frightening. Don’t watch alone or with children …
