I think Mr. Gold/Rumpelstiltskin is the deepest and most complex character on the show. The show’s characterization of him went from a malicious psychotic mad man, to a deeply flawed, sympathetic and almost tragic romatic figure. His character-centric episodes (Desperate Souls and Skin Deep) have been my favorite episodes so far. They’re always dark and tragic, with a hint of romance and compassion. To me, Rumpelstiltskin is the epitome of the tragic romantic figure. A man who started out as a simple and decent man, but succumbed to powerful temptation which ultimately destroyed him.
