That brings up the question of what exactly Emma’s power is. I have a feeling her power is making things magical again (e.g. the hat, the compass). She will never be able to actively use magic like Regina or Rumpel, but she somehow triggers the magical attributes of objects or maybe even people. Thus, if Emma got her hands on that dagger, it could very well start working again.
If you’re right (and I suspect that you are), then that makes Emma a very dangerous weapon. Not Emma herself, but the magic that she brings. If she’s able to infuse magic into something without magic, then she could easily be used by someone. Rumpel would be the main candidate for this, since Regina doesn’t even seem to know who she is.
That’s actually a really good point. If Emma isn’t careful, she could fall pray to someone seeking her magic for their own purposes. I would usually place Rumpel or Regina in that catagory, but Rumpel’s main goal is to find his son, and Regina doesn’t know who she is (yet). However, we did just find out that August wants to use her magic to heal his sickness. So, Emma has already fallen victim to someone trying to use her.
This all feeds into my theory that it won’t necessarily be Emma who actively breaks the curse. Rumpel said that Emma will be the “key” to breaking the curse, not the leader or enforcer. Keys need to be held someone. Keys need to go into a lock. Keys are in-and-of themselves, victims. They’re used by people to achieve a certain goal. This could be a hint to what may happen to Emma.
I’ve actually seen this kind of thing in a lot of movies and television shows. Everyone is obsessed with the “magical girl.” Not because of anything she herself has accomplihed, but because she holds some special kind of magic or gene. In this case, Emma has been given magic via the curse. The Vampire Diaries did this, True Blood did this, and a host of other shows and movies. Emma may end up being the sacrifical lamb at the end of this story. Now I’m curious to find out who will be the actual leader of the battle. Who will be guiding (or manipulating) Emma in this fight. After all this talk of Baelfire being Henry’s father, I want to say it’ll be him. The curse is actually about him. The curse’s main objective was to find Baelfire.
Or, it may end up being Henry himself.
