Well, I think he did a good job of staying in character as Mr. Gold for most of Season 1, actually, because even Regina–though she suspected as soon as he started to get very specific with his pleases–wasn’t sure for several months that he had his memories back (day after Emma’s birthday to Valentine’s day). So I think the Mr. Gold we know is pretty close to the pure SB Mr. Gold.
