“TheGoldenKey”
However, this thread isn’t about Greg Mendell’s fairy tale counterpart, if indeed he even has one. This theory is about Greg Mendell, the Outsider, and what he does for a living and what connection, as a OUTSIDER, he may have towards Storybrooke.
“Phee”
For me, the two things are connected, but that’s because I think he’s WofOz. Someone originally from our world, who went to Oz, then came back, and I think that whatever he’s been doing in our world, has been a personal search for SB, which he has an interest in as someone who has past experience with magical, storybook characters.
I think his arrival in town will show a converging of the scientific and the magical, a theme which they’ve already laid the groundwork for with the Frankenstein stuff. Viktor doesn’t have any true allies in town when it comes to science vs magic, and he’s started to lose hope. But if WofOz, someone who is more scientist than the magician he was once believed to be, was able to use his research in our non-magical world to locate SB, then that’s a little victory for science over magic, which could have an impact on Viktor’s beliefs and how the character progresses.
Greg’s place in the town could ultimately relate to the search for a way back to FTL, (another theme they’ve laid the groundwork for), if he has experience in finding ways to magical lands from our world. He did it when he went to Oz, he did it when he found SB, so it stands to reason that he should be able to find a way to FTL too. So like I said, for me, his potential storybook character past and his position in the real world and his connection to SB, are all intertwined, so I can’t really discuss one without considering the other as well.
Phee, I understand that. On other threads we’ve discussed the possibility of him being the WofOz, Peter Pan, even Jekyll/Hyde. I’m still juggling all those theories. However, I didn’t ask who Greg was on this thread, I shared a theory about what if he’s an outsider, who wrote Henry’s book. I was looking for feedback on this particular theory and that’s why I created a separate thread.
“TheGoldenKey” I’m open minded to consider all theories at this stage of the game because there is still so much information and clues to come. Having said that, what if he is just an outsider? Is it that far fetched to consider that he could be the writer of the book? The clues I’ve listed would certainly support this. K&H did say, last year, that we’d meet the author of the book this season.
“Phee” I don’t personally make the connection to him being a writer, given what we’ve seen of him thus far. For me, the food critic theory is a bit of a leap, and I think they just showed him tweeting food pics because it’s a mundane thing that many mundane people do, and they’re trying to fool us into believing he’s just a regular guy.
I’ve thought for ages that Blue Fairy wrote the book, as she was in a position to know everyone’s stories. And I think she planted it with MM in SB with the intent that it’d end up in Henry’s hands, which would get him clued into the curse business, which would drive him to find Emma. So when K&H say we’ll meet the writer of the book, I figure that means it’ll be a reveal that Blue wrote it, and Greg wouldn’t have a place in that storyline if I stick with that line of thinking I’ve had for ages.
If Greg did write the book, then how did it end up in SB? The tone of his phonecall didn’t sound to me like someone who was revisiting a place he’d been before. And if he’d sent the book there instead of delivering it, then he’d have already known where the town was, and wouldn’t be all excited to have stumbled on now.
Yes! 😀 We are now discussing the theory at hand.
I can understand you taking all the pictures on his cell phone as meaning that he’s a regular Joe Blow. That certainly gives me food for thought. 😉 I do have to say though, the first thing that jumped through my mind was that he was a food critic. But then, maybe I’m watching too many food network shows these days. 😀
I agree about Blue potentially writing the book. I”ve also considered Jefferson as he had maintained his memory all throughout the 28 years. In Hat Trick, he was all too familiar with Henry’s book as he tried to convince Emma about books being real. He had an awful lot to say about books when you think about it.
Henry’s book could have been one of hundreds that were published through a publisher. There are many books in Storybrooke. They came from the outside world, just as all their supplies did and still do. Wouldn’t be unusual for a copy of his book to have been there without Greg’s knowledge.
“Kellyn1604” So, I was thinking about Greg being the author of the book and it reminded me of The Neverending Story. A book where the characters are real and living the plot and a little boy reading it becomes part of the plot. In our case, the author becomes a part of it….a character in his own story…I like it.
“Phee” I do love me some Neverending Story, but could Greg’s age be a glitch in that theory? Ethan’s 34, the curse happened about 29 years ago, (if we include the time that’s passed since Emma got to town), which means if Greg is a real world person, (similar to Bastian), he was only about 5 when SB arrived, and by that point, all of FTL history had played out, without any interaction from him reading it. Events in SB aren’t in the book, so he can’t have read about that part of the story to end up being a part of it that way.
Ah, this is the feedback I was looking for 😀 You bring up an excellent point Phee. Going to have to think on this. Let me ask you though. Would Greg’s age not throw a glitch in him being the WofOz? I know back when I posted the thread “Ethan Embry is”, I stated I’d love to see him as the WofOz, however, his age was throwing me off as I thought he’d be at least in his 50’s. In 2×05, The Doctor, the Ruby Slippers are discussed and from Jefferson’s response it seems that they have already slipped out of Oz, presumably on Dorothy’s feet. That would have been at least 15 years prior to the curse thus being 43 years ago. Are you assuming that Greg remained in Oz all those years and has just recently returned?
