I guess my only comment would be that in the Disney story, Hook was always overcome and beat by Peter Pan, but he never gave up scheming and coming after him. If you consider that, he is actually playing that character quite well, only I don’t think he is a codfish.
I think the point is that there is higher ground the writers could be reaching for, and they’re not. Yeah, a character’s story is what it is, but I think they’re wasting a chance to make his story (and the character) meaningful and socially productive.
